Loreto Centro Culture: What you need to know

Staying at the Casita you will be immersed in Loreto culture. Half the roads are still dirt, so there is an element of dust. The municipality always has some construction underway. Many locals live and work for tourism in Loreto Centro. Many Canadians and US citizens make Loreto their home part of the year. When out walking you'll find street dogs, colorful music from shops, and loud speakers announcing sales. Most important is siesta time between 2pm and 4pm during which most business are closed. Loreto Centro is not a resort town, however Nopolo and Loreto Bay are, & a 20 minute drive.

What to Pack

You will definitely want your swim suit! Even in the winter the pool is refreshing (but not heated). Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat is recommended year round. In winter Nov - Mar, bring a jacket for the evenings when the sun goes down and the wind picks up. This will allow you to enjoy outdoor seating at restaurants. Bring good walking shoes and always watch where you step. If you plan to go snorkeling or sport fishing, you can pack your own gear or rent from a tour company or panga captain. Ask to have your fish cleaned at sea. Bring enough medication in case of emergency.

The Language

Staying in Loreto Centro you will be immersed in the language and culture. More and more locals speak English but you will want to be able to communicate even the basics in Spanish. You will want to know the difference between Agua Natural (natural bottled water) or Agua con Gas (sparkling). Load the a translation app onto a smart phone and you'll be set!

Drinking and Cooking Water

Water is scarce in the Baja desert. The Casita is serviced by city water. It can be used to brush teeth. Wash foods using Microdyne from the grocery store, or make a wash with white vinegar or baking soda, lemon juice, and water. Add grapefruit seed extract if you have it. Bottled drinking water is provided for you in the kitchen dispenser. When you need more, please contact the property manager for refills. The city shuts off the water completely when dangerously low, or for a few hours if they are flushing pipes or doing repairs. The 100 gallon cistern should be sufficient. Be conservative.
