Adventure in the Puna District
Neighborhoods
The little town of Pahoa is known as the "Wild West" but not what one might think but because of how the business walkways are raised above street level. There are quaint shops with handmade jewelry, trinkets and clothing. There are several places to get something to eat or even a cold drink. Kaleo's Bar & Grill offers a good variety of dishes as well as a full bar and Boogie Woogie Pizza are our favorites so far. The Mystic Closet offers handmade clothing and jewelry that might interest the world traveler, I found it quite unique. There is a Longs Drug, 2 supermarkets and couple tire stores, auto parts store and Puna Medical Center (Urgent Care), a few coffee/drink establishments and restaurants.

Sightseeing
Located about 3 miles outside of Pahoa on Hwy 132 Lava Tree State Monument will help you understand how lava takes shapes trees during its flow. After visiting here you will easily reconize where lava has taken shape of trees and other things.

A nice scenic drive from either Hawaiian Beaches community or from the new Hwy 132 is Government Beach Road. The road is narrow but there are many pull offs to navigate your way to parking areas within the reserve. Tall trees provide a canopy for tropical vines to spread up the trees. Once you reach the parking area you can enjoy the ocean at its best and soak in the crashing of the waves. A relaxing spot for a picnic

Located on Hwy 130 going to Uncle Roberts about 9 miles out of Pahoa is the this unique church that is open for public viewing. A must stop simply because you going this way to your next adventure.

While not much of a beach any more , you can walk across the lava along a path to enjoy the view along the ocean. A small black sand beach can be seen but is hard to navigate to it. Very peaceful place

Newly build road starting about 4 miles east of Pahoa that crosses the 2018 Lava flow. Truly a sight to see and experience. While not active you can feel the heat once you get out of your car. The are noticeable steam vents along the road too.

Food scene
Our first time trying their pizza and we weren't disappointed. I don't know the size but at least 20 inches across. Loaded with topping the supreme had good flavor with dough fresh made.

Just a nice little diner. We went for breakfast and prices are reasonable and the food was good. Just down home good cooking.

Maku'u Farmers Market, Sundays
Sundays.
Go early to get a good parking spot and oh, parking is $2.50 a car. There is hot food, fresh grown fruit and vegetables, local crafters and live music. We always go for breakfast then load up on fresh market items.

An umbrella for sun and rain in Puna
It rain here almost everyday, somewhere. Having an umbrella handy for a brief shower is nice and it is also good to shade you from the sun .

Souvenirs
I always like shopping for unusual items while on vacation. Good places for those are Farmers Markets for those.For others Longs Drug and Walmart are also good places. Antique stores you find Island Made Hawaiian shirts and Asian Antiques. My wife likes to get calendars from Longs Drug for gifts because they can be found for less than 2$
