Worth a walk to this ruin, constructed during Henry VIII's reign to defend against French invaders. Can't guarantee it'll be free of the French, but it's freeeeeee, and the little cafe is sometimes open.

Put on your shoes and stroll out the front door across the road and up the Lookout. Take a left to stroll through the gardens (a right turn takes you down to Newtons Cove). This was the spectator area for the sailing competitions in the 2012 Olympic games. Families - there is a wooden climbing frame and swing to wear out the little ones. Dog owners - there are plenty of red bins available. Also, there are rules about dogs on leads - the dog warden is known to patrol the area.

Weymouth BID and Weymouth Town Council are providing a family fun ‘Safari’, a story-trail, to help spread joy, support the NHS and give families a safe reason to return into Weymouth town centre. Launching on 15th July 2020, families and households in Weymouth will be invited to search the streets for 10 cute and colourful MonsterHeroes. Using only smartphones, the Safari allows you to learn each of the MonsterHero’s name, story, and superpowers. Once all 10 MonsterHeroes are found, a free e-book, that tells the story of their first team-up, will be unlocked. The Safari works by utilising contactless NFC technology and QR codes, without the need for players to download or sign up to anything, they simply need to tap or scan to play. The Safari aims to bring some sort of normality back to high streets and demonstrates an effective opportunity to entertain and excite shoppers. A clever way to help increase Weymouth centre footfall while ensuring the safety of the public. Over 100 BIDs and councils across the UK are taking part in the MonsterHero Safari project, which has been sponsored by Wild in Art, with the aim of raising over £100k for NHS Charities Together. In times of great stress, this project aims to provide the local community with a memorable experience that will bring a smile to the community of Weymouth.

Our family favourite pizza place, but I guess we're biased because we had one of the first pizzas after this young chap first opened in the old newsagents. Literally crawling distance from the cottage. A Marston's pub. This pub used to be great, but recently there have been more landlords than I've had hot dinners there. Looks like it is opening up for drinks only, and close at 1800 on Sundays. So, grab a drink and sit out on the patio overlooking the harbour before the landlord changes again.

Sightseeing - further afield

A firm favourite with many people. I've not chanced it since a near miss with my then 2 year old mistaking a lemur's tail for a bell-pull. Hasn't currently reopened. Keep checking: www.monkeyworld.org

Whatever you're thinking, trust me. I thought this would be really dull (even for an engineer), but I was pleasantly surprised. The volunteers who work there are very knowledgeable, even with a school trip of 9 year olds. The life -size mock up of the WW1 trenches is very realistic. Booking in advance recommended: www.tankmuseum.org

Super if you like swans (I don't after a childhood incident). Actually, there's much more than just those long-necked bitey beasts. The gardens are stunning and they hold regular events, such as tree climbing, illuminations and sculpted wood walks. Pre-booking is essential: http://abbotsbury-tourism.co.uk/gardens/

Learn all about shipwrecks and smugglers, Roman and Viking invasions, stone carving and dinosaurs. Learn more about the unique place that is Portland (the locals proudly sport "Keep Portland Weird" car bumper stickers). Also visit Church Ope Cove while here. Stone sculpture to commemorate the 2012 Olympic games. Beautiful views of Chesil Beach and the Fleet Lagoon, where you can bore the kids all about sandy deposits, tombolo and barrier beaches while they gaze longingly at the ice cream van parked in the car park.

Absolutely fascinating place where time stood still smack bang in the middle of an MoD firing range. Yep, that's right - you've got to pick the right day to visit (www.tynehamopc.org.uk) this village which was abandoned in 1943. Makes the kids appreciate life and all that they have.
