Located in Bau District, Mount Singai takes only 50 minutes’ drive from HK Square apartment. If you are not particularly athletic but still want to be active, then Mount Singai is perfect for you. Mount Singai hiking area can be split into two sections. The first half is a set of stairs leading to the Catholic Memorial and Pilgrimage Centre (CMPC) while the second half is the hiking trail leading to the summit. Typically, an average hiker can reach the pilgrimage centre within 20 to 30 minutes while the hiking ground can take about an hour to reach. Visitors might find Mount Singai relaxing and enjoyable as the hiking terrain is not as hard and challenging as most hiking spots around Kuching. Also, due to the steps and the inclining nature of Mount Singai, it is the best spot to pump up your cardio and enjoy nature. Fairy Cave (also known as Gua Pari) is an impressive show cave near the former gold mining settlement of Bau and about 45 minutes drive from HK Square apartment. It is just a few minutes drive from another show cave, Wind Cave, and most tourists would combine both on a half-day trip from Kuching. Access to the cave is via a four storey concrete staircase which brings you to the cave entrance. You pass through a dim, narrow passage and up some steep wooden steps. It is fairly dark but you can manage without a torch, unlike Wind Cave where a torch is essential. Some might find this part rather claustrophobic but bear with it as the passage soon emerges into a massive cave with a huge opening which allows the light to flood in. For over 20 years, the wardens at Semenggoh Nature Reserve have been training young orangutans, who had been orphaned or rescued from captivity, how to survive in the wild. The success of this programme has left the surrounding forest reserve with a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult orangutans, who are now breeding in the wild. The programme has since been transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre, but Semenggoh Nature Reserve is still home to its successful graduates, semi-wild orangutans and their babies. This place may be the first Kueh Chap shop ever opened in Kuching. They have been operating this shop since 1985 and has become one of the key iconic places to have a bowl of delicious Kueh Chap in Kuching. They operate in one of the stalls of a cafe called Woon Lam Cafe. The locals normally refer to this place as “Woon Lam Kueh Chap”. The Kueh Chap served here is definitely not something you would want to miss when you visit Kuching. The soup is packed with flavours and you can smell the delicious smell coming out from the soup when the bowl was being served. For our Muslim fans, do bear in mind that they do serve pork so this place is not halal. It is served with pork meat and various other pork parts. As Kueh Chap is normally served with the meat mixed inside the bowl of soup, you can opt to have the meat separated and served on a different plate. They are both technically the same thing and is normally based on people’s preference.

Some say it’s a sin to visit Kuching without having a bowl of its kolo mee. Unique to Sarawak, kolo mee is a combinational of noodles, meat and vegetables tossed in a transparent sauce. A Sarawakian Chinese favourite, kolo mee is different from the wantan mee served in the peninsular Malaysia due to the fact that the former is not drenched in dark soy sauce.  Situated close to the riverfront, the kolo mee at Chong Choon Café is within walking distance from many popular hotels located along the Sarawak River. The springy noodle of the kolo mee here is perfectly complemented by the minced pork and the red char siew. Don’t let the plate fool you, it is in fact a deep bowl and the noodles run deep. The food court attracts patrons from all faiths due to the variety of food found under the same roof, an example of the beauty of Sarawak.
