Food Scene

Good family place, good food, reasonable prices, friendly atmosphere even to those of us without much Spanish. Run by neighbors.

Our favorite for the wonderful Vietnamese soup called Pho. Open all hours and inexpensive, one bowl fills you all day long. Kids welcome. A few miles up Columbia Pike near Trader Joe's and Best Buy.

Everything Else

Best bakery in town. Try their saltenas, a yummy meat "pie". Some of the soups are good, too -- some not so much to my taste. A few tiny tables, but I use it for takeout.

Elegant and unexpected along gentrifying Columbia Pike. Beautiful gym, many activities. Google "Arlington Mill Community Center & gym". Best way to get there is a pretty walk through Glencarlyn park. From the house turn right (west) on 8th St 1 1/2 blocks to Buchanan. Left on Buchanan 2 (short) blocks to (South) 9th st which runs down to the park to your right. Enter the park, cross the bike path, continue down towards the water, and take the left fork just before you reach the stream. This fork continues on its own way across the stream and if you look up and to the right, you'll see the community center up the hill. About 10 minutes' walk.

This park begins in our neighborhood (at Columbia Pike) and extends along the stream northwest past Arlington Blvd and beyond. You get there via either 7th or 9th streets. (Both 8th St. and 8th Rd. dead end before reaching the park). The park's bike path (Four-Mile Run Trail) extends southeast to the Potomac (and ultimately Mt. Vernon) and northwest 45 miles to the foothills of the Blue Ridge.) A pleasant walk anytime. Aspshalt much of the way. Women alone should avoid at night.

After the Vietnam war, many Vietnamese who had worked with Americans settled in the DC area, notably around Arlington. Holy Martyrs of Vietnam, one block away, is Northern Virginia's Vietnamese Catholic church. Multiple masses on the weekends said in Vietnamese. Very active community (youth groups, boy scouts, choir groups, senior groups, etc) with a full range of ages represented. The community is conservative and perhaps unwelcoming to non-Vietnamese, but on holiday evenings events take place outdoors among sidewalk shrines and throughout the parking lot. If you hear singing, that's probably the source, and their bells toll at 7 minutes before the hour throughout the day. If church isn't your thing but Vietnamese food is, Eden Center at 6751 Wilson Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22044 is a 10-minute drive away. Myriad shops selling wonderful food, and the biggest Chinese Grocery ever.
