Sightseeing
The cottage is located in the centre of some great places to visit and see. From the cottage you can easily get to the North York Moors, The Yorkshire Dales, The Howardian Hills and the Yorkshire Coast. York, Harrogate, Ripon and Leeds can be reached between 30 - 60 minutes by car. York and London can easily be reached on direct trains from Thirsk.
Really close to the cottage and about 10-15 minutes drive. If your are early enough you can sometimes be the only people there. Free to enter.

We would really recommend a trip to Hackfall Woods near Masham. It's about 30 min drive from the cottage. The woodland is beautiful with lots of waterfalls, views of the river Ure and grotto's and follies to explore. There are a number of different walking trails. If you look at the Woodland Trust website there are details of the trails and where to park. Best to arrive early and drive onto Masham for a coffee/lunch.

Suki bought me an Owl experience here. Had a really good time and the instructors were very experienced, friendly and centre is really well run. Highly recommended.

One of our favourite beaches and only 45-60 minutes away from the cottage. Grab some fish and chips, book a beach hut, chill out on the beach, learn to surf or take a walk on the pier. Parking is free on Marine Parade and you can either take the tramway down or walk down to the beach.

Really beautiful nature reserve with lots of hides and well marked out walking trails. We have just been and we were lucky to see barn owls hunting prey in the wetland at 10:00 am in the morning. Dogs are welcome but must be on a lead.
Combine this with a pint and/or lunch at the Royal Oak in Steveley.

Minskip RoadReally beautiful nature reserve with lots of hides and well marked out walking trails. We have just been and we were lucky to see barn owls hunting prey in the wetland at 10:00 am in the morning. Dogs are welcome but must be on a lead.
Combine this with a pint and/or lunch at the Royal Oak in Steveley.

For a really special occasion you could book a table here at this Tommy Bankl's Michelin-starred restaurant that is really close to the cottage. They have tasting menu. You probably need to organise a taxi. He has also just taken over the Abbey Arms by Byland Abbey.

Nice pub in beautiful village. From the pub if you walk up behind the bus shelter and the follow the footpath up the hill you will see some amazing view across the moors. Well worth it !

Really good old fashioned cinema and featured many times in the James Herriot TV show on C5. You can't book ahead and you must queue up for tickets. Park in the market square or in the Tesco car park.

Helmsley is a lovely town to visit and is about 20-30 minutes drive from the cottage. You can visit the castle, walled gardens or just have a wander. We can highly recommend the river walk at nearby Duncombe Park.

The market is on Friday mornings with stalls selling fresh bread, fruit and veg, flowers etc. Our favourite stall is the one selling olives, nuts and freshly made Indian takeaways. With the naan bread, we cook it with garlic butter until crisp, it's delicious.
Check out the Galtres Centre which has cinema, live events and musicals. There are a lot of independent cafes and shops.
