A world class art gallery -- spanning the globe and historical eras -- set in an early example of one of architecture's great masters, Louis Kahn (see his later masterpiece across the street: the Yale Center for British Art). A newer addition has expanded the experience.

A favorite art gallery out of all my travels - due to the intimate setting for the art and the serenity and beauty of the museum architecture. Designed by the renowned Louis Kahn, the museum is itself a work of art. Also see and compare his earlier museum across the street: the Yale Art Gallery.

New Haven boasts a number of architectural specimens in the brutalist tradition. The Temple Street Garage is another Paul Rudolph design highlighting the sinuous, but stark concrete forms of the style.

Architect Marcel Breuer's 1966 brutalist design for the Armstrong Rubber Company suspends administrative offices two stories above a two-story research and development space that originally extend laterally 3 times longer than it's height. When IKEA bought the site in 1990's they lobbed it off. Wikipedia: "The negative space between the building's two forms was reportedly intended to reduce sound in the offices from the development labs below. The building's facade is constructed entirely of pre-cast concrete paneling designed to provide sun protection and visual depth."

Built in 1967 during New Haven’s “Model City” urban renewal era, the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church is another brutalist architectural gem. Designed by New York-based architect John M. Johansen, the church resembles an artichoke in plan, with cut-stone exterior walls set in patterns of vertical slabs and large windows.

Morse and Ezra Stiles Colleges were among the final works designed by the esteemed modernist architect Eero Saarinen, a Yale alumnus, before his untimely death at age 51. Completed in 1962, the difficult floor plans were reconcieved by Kieran Timberlake Architects in 2011 - winning a number of architectural awards.

Built between 1953 and 1958 for Yale University, the Ingalls hockey rick was designed by the esteemed modern architect Eero Saarinen. Commonly referred to as The Whale, due to its caternary arch form which employs a 90-meter reinforced concrete center spine. Named for David S. Ingalls, Yale class of 1920, and David S. Ingalls, Jr., Yale class of 1956, both of whom were hockey captains. The building was included on the America's Favorite Architecture list, created in 2007 by the American Institute of Architects.

The New Haven Fire Headquarters—by Earl Carlin, with Peter Millard and Paul Pozzi— won a 1961 Progressive Architecture Award over the vehement objections of jury chairman Charles Colbert, then dean of architecture at Columbia University. The city of New Haven envisioned this prominently sited project as a “gateway” to its Wooster Square redevelopment area. The fire station’s smooth concrete flanks are scored with subtle vertical grooves; today, its exposed concrete—inside and out—looks very good for its age.

Built in 1961-1963 and designed by Architect Gordon Bunshaft, of Skidmore Owings & Merrill. The design is in the New Formalist mode of Modernism, using a symmetrical and repeated rhythm of geometric pattern. The structure of the library consists of four walls, each a Vierendeel welded steel tapered-cross truss into which a grid of 1/4 inch thick Vermont Montclair Danby marble panes has been fitted. The exterior of the steel is clad in granite while the interior frame is clad in precast stone and granite.

A modernist blend of a cathedral nave and a Connecticut barn - using Ohio sandstone and fir louvers - the building is long and thin, sited to admit heat (from above and below ground), daylight, and air – as well as to create outdoor spaces. Gus Speth, Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, wanted to build the greenest building on the planet. The flagship of Yale University’s sustainability mission, Kroon Hall is designed to use 58 percent less energy than a comparable peer.

Food scene

Founded in 1925 by Frank Pepe - this local pizzeria is renowned for establishing the "New Haven-style thin-crust apizza" baked in coal-fired ovens topping 800 degrees. Expect long lines with both locals and tourists, but catch it at an off hour and enjoy a real treat.

One of my favorite upscale modern restaurants (along with Heirloom). Consistently excellent dining providing quality service and wonderfully conceived and executed dishes using organic and local ingredients. Sophisticated sleek decor.

By far the best seafood shack on the Connecticut coast. Get the Treasure Chest - a bounty of fried shrimp, clams, scallops, calamari, and fish, along with crab cakes, cole slaw, french fries and Texas toast - will feed 2 to 6. Grab a local Foxon Park soda in distinctive flavors such as White Birch, Gassosa, and Lemon-lime. Only a few tables inside the pirate-themed shanty, with more generous long communal tables outside under the trellis. Located across the street from the white sand shores of the West Haven beach front, enjoy an after dinner stroll down the boardwalk.

Heirloom is the up-scale restaurant fronting the hotel at The Study at Yale. A Foodie's paradise, with well-conceived and well-plated dishes featuring local ingredients. Superb service in a modern urbane setting with a great overlook of the night life on Chapel Street.

The food, the food, the food - oh and the inexpensive margaritas: passion fruit or mango! It's a classic hole-in-the-wall joint in a slightly run-down neighborhood, but worth the trek out of downtown for the food.
