Razgledavanje

Stari Grad (Pharos) is the oldest town in Croatia. The same year - 384 b.c. when greek philoshoper Aristotel was born in Trakia, the greeks from the island of Paros in Agean sea have settled the town on the island of Hvar, and named it Pharos. Stari Grad (eng. "old town") is historical heart of the island of Hvar. The town is situated in a landscape where the blue of the deep bay touches the green of the wide an famous field of Pharos, with vineyards and olive-groves. The fields used to provide sustenance and the bay provided protection. Today, both the fields and the bay add an attractive quality to the island, in which the modern vacation sights have become intertwined with the antiquities of the town and of the island. Because of its position in the middle of the Hvar island, for centuries Stari Grad was a safe harbour to sailors, which have been welcomed by town inhabitants on harbour promenade. Stari Grad bay is still regulary visited by most of the travellers on boats passing trough middle Dalmatia. The town is surrounded with pine tree forest and cooled with summer breeze (maestral). In the hot summer days it is one of the rare Dalmatian places where the air is fresh and the sleep refreshing. A thousand years long history of the Town has left many monuments in the urban structure of the Town. A walk through the Stari Grad center, narrow streets and small squares brings the whisperings of the past times.
Tvrdalj was built as a fort for defence from the Turks by the renowned poet from Hvar Petar Hektorović. It was erected by filling up the sea and one could enter it only over a bascule bridge. In the centre of Tvrdalj, Hektorović designed and built a Romanic park with a fishpond. Tvrdalj has numerous stone inscriptions, but the one saying 'Omnium Conditori' is the most significant one, since with it, Hektorović dedicated his Tvrdalj to God, the Creator of everything.

Of the numerous small squares in Stari Grad, the most picturesque one is the Škor Square. Almost like a theatre coulisse (which it actually becomes during the summer cultural events), this square was formed , during the 17th and 18th centuries from a stretch of shallow water. It was once home to a shipyard which was covered and the square took its name from this (škor from škver, in Dalmatian dialect, means shipyard). This curved space where mythical Dalmatia lives is enclosed by typical dalmatian working-class houses with picturesque luminari (roof windows) as well as sulari and skalinade (stone terraces with staircases).

The Kabal peninsula, whose form resembles the fingers of a hand, is located in the north-western part of Stari Grad Bay. At the very entrance to the Bay is the Kabal cape - an eighty metre high rock - and on the end of the Bay is Stari Grad, one of the safest natural harbours in the Adriatic. During crystal clear days you will have the feeling of sailing into some kind of fjord. You will leave behind high hills that drop steeply into the sea on the southern part, and far away, in the depth of the bay, is the town of Stari Grad. For those who want to find a quiet corner and enjoy themselves in the shade of the pine trees, cool summer mistral and clear waters, the beautiful pebble coves on the peninsula which close the Stari Grad bay are the ideal choice.
