Suggestions for 1st time visitors. You are not likely to have time to do all that is suggested if you are here for a week or less, so you have many options to choose from. We have a comprehensive guide to send you. This guide's suggestions are limited to those on AirBNB list and does not allow for suggestions of various hiking trails, museums, and tours. There is no way for us to add misc suggestions for those they have missed. Please send us an email at myvacrent@yahoo so that we may send our comprehensive guide.
A 27 miles long road with breath-taking scenery all along the way. You may purchase an auto tour tape at visitor’s center but it is not necessary to enjoy the scenery. A MUST see for 1st time visitors. The views are just stunning.

Located on the park loop road. Thunder Hole is a small crevice, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this crevice, down low, is a small cavern where the water rushes in trapping air which is forced out like a clap of thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: “Thunder Hole.” It is best seen on a stormy day around the rising mid-tide.

Beautiful pond with Bubble Mountains in the background. Many hiking trails around and above the pond. The one around the pond is 3.2 miles round-trip but you can stop and turn around anywhere if this is to long. If you start by going left, you will encounter a raised, wooden plank boardwalk over the vegetation to preserve the ecosystem. This side is a little rocky but manageable for most people. As you are walking around the pond, there are many areas to step off the path and enjoy the scenery. If you start by going right, the path is very flat and even until you get to the other end of the pond.

One of the most visited and photographed lighthouses in New England. It is land-accessible. Beautiful place to get Sunset pictures.Trail right of the parking lot goes down a paved road to view the lighthouse. Trail to the left of the parking lot goes down step wooden stairs and stone steps to the granite ledges below the lighthouse. This side gives you the best view of the lighthouse in our opinion.

This is a natural seawall made of stones and carved ledges. The scenery is spectacular. Enjoy listening to the waves, watching lobster boats/sail boats, or playing in the tidal pools. Picnic tables with Bar-B-Q grills are at nearby picnic grounds, so bring a lunch and visit for a while. At night, you usually see shooting stars if it is not cloudy.

Fresh water swimming beach and trail head for several good hiking trails with spectacular views. 15° warmer than Sand Beach (ocean water). Life guards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. 1 of 2 beaches with sand instead of the typical cobblestones.

The highest point along the North Atlantic Coast (1,532 feet). Sometimes this is the 1st place to see the sunrise. Panoramic 360° views of Porcupine Islands, Bar Harbor, Frenchmen’s Bay, & Eagle Lake, just to name a few. You can even see Mt Katahdin (Baxter State Park) on a clear day.

Ocean water and a sandy beach. It is located on the Park Loop Road on the one-way section. May want to take the bus as parking can be difficult with the amount of visitors. Water is cold. Many nearby hiking trails with great views.

You can walk or drive across the bar and explore Bar Island at low tide. Be sure to check the tide tables and be back across before the tide rises or you will be spending the night. Part of the island is private property, so be respectful. Great place to explore for marine life and get beautiful sunset pictures.

Take a cruise to learn about the lobster industry and see seals, eagles, lobster, and lighthouses up close. Boat leaves from Shore Lane in Bass Harbor. (207) 244-5785, 5 minutes from the house. We have taken the whale watch cruises in Bar Harbor a few times and have been disappointed in that the cost is high and we have never seen much. You will usually only see the top fin of fin backs and their whale spout and a few small Minke whales that kind of look like porpoises. It is our opinion that Island Cruises is the better bang for the buck and the price is more reasonable as well. They have several trips to choose from.
