Legend dates the creation of Mexico City to the 14th century, when the nomadic Aztecs founded a permanent capital they called Tenochtitlán on the precise spot that a devine sign had revealed to them. The story goes that the god Huitzilopochtli instructed them to build a great city at the place where they saw a serpent being devoured by an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus growing out of a rock, in the middle of a rock. Centro Histórico is comprised of 35 blocks that contain iconic squares and buildings such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, The National Palace, the Museo del Templo Mayor and archeological excavations of the main temple of Tenochtitlán.

Recently renovated, this is the oldest park on the entire American continent. The Viceroy Luis de Velasco ordered it to be built in 1592 for the enjoyment of his neighbours, and for centuries it marked the eastern boundary of the city. With its foundations and crowds of people from all social backgrounds, it makes for an entertaining spectacle.

The Monument to the Revolution was designed by leading Art Deco architect Carlos Obregón Santacilia. It was part of a planned Legislative Palace that was never built, due to the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution. Like other parts of the city, the Monument to the Revolution and the surrounding square were recently renovated and this is now one of the most popular sites for locals to come and relax. Underneath the monument is a small museum devoted to the Revolution.

The foundations facade of this colossus of the arts were planned during the last phase of the Porfiriato. Its interior was finished by the government that came out of the Mexican Revolution, which is why this white building has an Art Nouveau exterior but an Art Deco interior. The Palace of Fine Arts hosts operas and classical music concerts, as well as art exhibitions. It also possesses a version of the Diego Rivera mural from the Rockefeller Center in New York that Nelson D. Rockefeller ordered to be destroyed.

Perhaps one of the best French restaurants in the city, this spot serves sophisticated cuisine in a simple setting, best enjoyed at an outdoor table where you can watch the people go by. Start with the house terrine or the onion soup, then try the quenelles or boeuf bourguignon. The steak au poivre is top choice.

Mexico’s best Japanese restaurant. Do not imagine this typical place serving Yakimeshi and Tampico. Rokai offers a omakase menu, meaning a vote of confidence in the chef: in other words, let the chef pick your meal. And rest assured this is your best bet and your trust is in safe hands.

Contemporary Mexican Cuisine. Before opening Quintonil, it’s talented chef Jorge Vallejo was one of the team at Pujol, along with his wife Alejandra Flores, a first-rate restaurant manager. With this couple in charge, Quintonil has, over time, become one of the finest places to dine in the city. Quintonil offers exemplary dishes that promise superb flavours, aromas, textures and childhood memories, such as green rice with poblano chilli, avocado and hard boiled egg; huazontles (a plant that resembles broccoli) with queso de cuadro (artisanal cheese) from Chiapas and tomato sofrito, chilacayotes (Chinese pumpkin) with a classic homemade mole sauce; a salad of fresh crisp quintonil leaves, to

A place serving specialities from northern Italy that can boast the level of authenticity and elegance demonstrated by chef Elena Reygadas, who travelled across Europe and worked alongside Giorgio Locatelli in London before opening Rosetta. The restaurant is housed in an early 19th century residence, one of the most exquisitely renovated in “La Roma”, and has a well lit patio, screens, wooden floors and Provençal decorations.

Mikel Alonso, Bruno Oteiza and Gerard Bellver have been living and working hard in Mexico for many years. So successful have they been in putting their expertise to good use that they have feature in the San Pellegrino list of the fifty best chefs worldwide. The menu is divided in two. First there’s the playful and sophisticated taster menu. With the second menu, diners encounter more familiar flavours and more substantial dishes, prepared with great finesse.

This is a small relaxed establishment, where the fresh produce, in many cases organic and mostly locally sourced, takes centre stage in the masterly concert of flavours orchestrated by its chef and owner Eduardo García, who previously worked at Pujol and Le Bernardin in New York. What makes the proprietor particularly popular is that he is always in charge of the open kitchen. Even regular diners here find new dishes to try. An essential destination for foodies.

Neither a food hall, nor a restaurant, this recently opened space hosts an impressive selection of the city’s best restaurants and pop-up projects from leading chefs. The concept is simple: find a table, then pick and choose from an extensive menu of dishes prepared by any of the purveyors. Table service removes any need to wait in line or jostle for elbow space.

The first bar in Latin America opened by the infamous team of bartenders behind Le Baron, Xaman is an inconspicuous underground drinking hole inspired by the shamanic cultures of ancient Mexico. Its cocktail menu proposes something completely new - a return to “ethnobotany” - inspired from indigenous ingredients such as espazote, hoja santa, cardamom and copal bitters. Entering the dimly lit room reveals a parallel world, one of black obsidian, dark wood, onyx and green marble.
