FastFood! For a little (fast food) taste of Mexico, and really the only good Mexican food you can get in Iceland, Serrano is the place to go to. Founded by two locals after travels south of the border, Serrano emphasizes fresh, healthy, quality food and they succeed in doing so. Think of a healthier version of Chipotle. Go to dishes: Cajun Burrito with a side of everything else that’s on the menu.

Now to a real hidden gem, Thai Matstofan. This place is the furthest thing from fancy and it’s located in Skeifan about a five-minute drive from the city center. I’m not going to lie the first time a friend took me here I wasn’t totally sure it was a great idea. Since many years have passed and I keep coming back. The prices are good, the food is amazing and the people are so friendly. You won’t regret a visit to Thai Matstofan. Go to dish: I always have the Pad Thai.

The prices are good, the food is amazing and the people are so friendly. You won’t regret a visit to Thai Matstofan. Go to dish: I always have the Pad Thai.

The Coocoo’s Nest being an absolute favorite, this place is the best for weekend brunch. On weeknights they alternate different menus, you can find everything from taco Tuesday to sourdough pizza nights. It can get a little crammed in here and they don’t take reservations, but you never have to wait long. Go to dish: The Breakfast Burrito, Soups and Salads and their sandwiches.

The Thai Noodle Station was opened in 2009 and has since become a true staple for locals and travelers alike. The menu here is simple, there is soup. You can choose a vegetarian option, beef or chicken and that is that. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the menu, the quality of ingredients is outstanding, and there certainly is a dash of secret magic in there, making this simple option, oh so good.

Tomato, tomatoe. There is plenty for all to go around. A tomato farm located in Bláskógabyggð, here you have an entire tomato inspired menu. You’ll have a selection of everything from their classic tomato soup to tomato icecream (I know that sounds strange, but it’s delicious). If you are lucky you may catch the horse show on you way in or out, where the icelandic horse shows of it unique gates. Don’t miss the gift store, personally I make sure to never run out of their jams. This is a perfect stop after Gullfoss, and close to the Secret Lagoon.

The exquisite sculptures are over 100 years old that adorn the garden have complex and yet interpretable symbolism. His works include Ingólfur Arnarson- the first settler (located on Arnarholl Hill) and Jón Sigurdsson (facing parliament on Austurvöll square)
