The royal family moved to another residence in the district of Belem, and the new arcaded buildings became the entry port of the city. Its north side hosts a triumphal arch and one of the city's legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada, a favourite for writers Fernando Pessoa, Almeida Garrett and Eça de Queiroz. The centre of the square boasts the statue of King José I, which is 14 meters high
