Food Scene

Food hall & cafes: closed on Mondays, super sales & tastings on Tuesdays. Saturdays Smelteverket (the pub downstairs with lovely river views which has the longest bar in Scandanavia) has free food & live music. They also have pop-up food vendors and several shops that sell regional Norwegian products that make for great gifts. In the Vulkan area around Mathallen there are quite a few restaurants, cafes, bars and even a lovely roof top terrance with sun and excellent views.

This little cottage serves waffles and coffee most days and is located by one of the few natural waterfalls in a capital city. Across the bridge from a old traditional textile mill.

Shopping

Sunday arts & crafts market, large graffiti murals, live music, and a cafe sometimes. A lovely place to stop by during a walk along the river or on a Sunday. Blå is the funky artsy "underground" scene of Oslo. It's a small area just on the river with the best art supply store in Norway (KEM), loads of private artist studios, a gallery on the 2nd floor, a Sunday arts and crafts market from 12-5pm with vintage clothes, food and arts and crafts usually made by the folks sitting at the table. Blå itself is the name of the bar/cafe with plenty of outdoor seating by the river as well as free live zydeco (Frank Znort band) music on Sundays at 4:30pm and again at 8pm. The area is covered in murals, sculpture coming out of the walls, high-level graffiti / works of art, as well as the well-known outdoor glass chandelier. It's a great place to spend your Sundays or a natural stop as you walk along the river between Gronland and Kjelsås. Highly recommended. And despite the graffiti, the area is quite safe. The graffiti here is simply an artistic expression of the local artists and not a sign of a run down neighborhood. :)

There is a sizable flea market on the south side of Birkelunden park every Saturday. And approx. once a month there is a farmers market with Norwegian regional specialities and home grown produce.

This is the closest grocery store (just downstairs) and is open on Sundays and late into the night. They have the basics, but if you want more of a choice, and a bit cheaper prices on some stuff, best to go to Kiwin a few blocks over on Markveien.

Drinks & Nightlife

Ryes is a fun place popular with the rock-a-billy / Tattoo set. But if that is not you, don't let that put you off from visiting this fun friendly bar which has dancing in the back in the evenings. They also have burgers, fries, shakes and other food and is quite popular during the day as well.

Bar Boca and Aku Aku near by are known for the best cocktails in the city. A fun Tiki-like atmosphere. Bar Boca is tiny though so if there isn't any more space, try Aku Aku which is a bit bigger.

Hytta is a nice little local bar across the street. Glød which is next door to Hytta is a bit bigger and more cosy with a fireplace and good, cheap soup as well as books and board games to entertain. Both places are small enough that the bar staff are happy to chat with you if you are going out alone, yet want to be a bit social.

This is a small Japanese tapas bar with interesting nibbles and drinks. It's a bit of a hole in the wall but worth the effort once you find it. The staff is friently and knowledgable. It's a small but popular place so be prepared to share your table and try to get there earlier than later.

This is a large park just 2 blocks away. Very popular for picnics, sunbathing, and just chilling in the summer. On a warm sunny day the park will be pretty packed. There is also exercise equipment for adults and playgrounds for kids. The entire park used to be a cemetery (1858-1918 or so) until the neighbors decided that they'd rather have live than dead people next door. There is still the Jewish cemetery and Sofienberg church in the park if you want to explore a bit of the neighborhood history.
