This was once a black high school in Charlottesville during segregation time (1926-51); it became the elementary school in 1951. It was almost sold to be turned into condos, but after protests, the city renovated it and turned it into the Heritage Center. Interesting fact: it was that it was used for several years as a public school just for all sixth graders in Charlottesville. It now has rotating exhibits-- often about local African-American history--readings, and other events. Check the calendar. (Not sure what is happening due to COVID 19) . It also has a cafe hosted by Pearl Island Catering, (delicious Caribbean food). Not sure if the cafe is open for sit down, but they do contact-less serving. Hint: they also sell food at the city market.

Food Scene - Charlottesville favorite Bodos Bagels!

For great, and cheap bagels and sandwiches, Bodos Bagels is a must try. The garlicky Ceasar Salad is a popular item for salad lovers. A very popular spot among locals and UVa students alike, often there is a line out the door on weekends. Since COVID 19 they are available for drive-thru pick up.

This used to be something of a secret among Charlottesville natives, but has become very well known over the years. Drive out barracks road to Sugar Hollow, the old girlscout camp, past the Sugar Hollow Resevoir. Cross the creek and itś a fairly easy hike to the swimming hole. On the way back, look out for the old chimney. (Somehow I never see it on the way up!)

The Rivanna Trail goes all around Charlottesville. From my house there are two close / walkable entrances. 1) From my house turn right down Belleview Ave; at the bottom of the hill go right. Go left into the Auto Zone parking lot and you will find the steps to the trail there. This is a paved, flat trail, that winds along the river, great for walking or biking. For tubing, find the tubing company just past the Cosner Brothers Parking Lot. 2) a second entrance: from my house turn left on Calhoun (1 block away) then right on Locust. Go all the way to the end of Locust Ave. Go left on Locust Lane, then take an immediate right onto Megan Court. The entrance to the Rivanna trail is there near the trash cans. Walk along the creek. If you go all the way to the end you come out on Holmes Ave.
