Food Scene

This iconic restaurant is where the locals go for great Italian food at reasonable prices, just like Mamma makes it! Sometimes noisy, boisterous, and always great value. And the focaccia bread is amazing! It's hot, it's doughy, it's salty and it just keeps coming as part of your meal. The best focaccia bread I've ever tasted. You need to get there early for dinner and lunch as it fills up fast. This is hands down our favourite restaurant in Victoria. It's about a twenty minute walk from Burgundy House.

Milestones is a chain restaurant with an extensive menu of great West Coast dining, including seafood, and consistently great service. Their location, an eight minute walk from Burgundy House, overlooking the inner harbour is fabulous - catch the harbour when it's lit up at night - gorgeous view - reservations are recommended - ask for a window seat!

Barb's and Chips is in a funky little houseboat/fishing community, about a twenty minute walk from Burgundy House through a really nice residential area. Or you can reach it via a longer walk along the waterfront to take in the views. The food is great and you can sit and eat it on the dock, taking in some great people watching at this colourful little waterfront community. Their fish usually comes fresh off the dock. Very dog friendly.

This bakery on Yates Street is a half hour walk from Burgundy House and has the best bread and bakery goods in town and a great coffee shop. Its croissants and baguette are fabulous, rivalling anything you could find in a French boulangerie. It's hard to stop eating their crusty breads when they're warm, right out of the wood fired oven! (You might want to check out my write up for drop ins at the Victoria Athletic Club, an eight minute walk from Burgundy House, to work off whatever you consume!)

The Dutch bakery has been family owned and operated for decades. It specializes in old fashioned British pastries like Battenberg Cake and chocolate eclaires -all displayed in its shop window. In behind is a wonderful little coffee shop, like stepping back into the nineteen fifties, where you'll get great service and a piping hot coffee or tea in one of those little cafeteria tea pots like the old days! A friend's daughter who worked there told me that Victoria expats actually order non-perishible pastries and chocolates to be mailed to them from as far away as Singapore and Europe! It's about a twenty minute walk from Burgundy House.

The Beacon Drive Inn hasn't changed since my Mom and Dad used to take me there as a child - great soft ice-cream - the best in town. Join the fast moving line up and get your ice-cream and maybe a burger and an order of onion rings - all that good old drive in food. Eat it on the premises or take it across the street to devour while you explore Dallas Road and Beacon Hill Park. This place is an institution for the locals and it's about a five minute walk from Burgundy House!

Caffe Fantastico is a locally owned coffee shop, about an eight minute walk from Burgundy House. Its coffee is fabulous and it serves good light meals. You can reach it by walking through Beacon Hill Park and the grounds of St. Anne's Academy, a former hospital run by Catholic Sisters. (Its manicured gardens an orchards include great story boards about Victoria in the old days and the role of the Catholic sisters.) The service is friendly and the delicious food varies from day to day, depending on the creative whim of the chef! Very reasonably priced, with outdoor seating where you can include your four legged friend.

Parks & Nature

There's nothing is more beautiful than a walk along Dallas Road at dusk. Or get up early and enjoy the glorious sunrise. Join the locals any time of day on this gorgeous oceanfront walk. You can explore the beach below or relax on one of the many benches and just drink in the scenery. I think Dallas Road is Victoria's best gem. (Dogs welcome on a lead along Dallas Road and there is an off lead play section, they need to be on a lead in the park - avoiding the nesting heron area - or take your four legged friend on a romp along the beach or for an ocean swim!)

Beacon Hill Park is a mix of wild forested area, beautifully groomed walkways punctuated by big stone fountains amid little lakes, and a lookout area with fabulous views. You might stumble across a cricket game on the old cricket pitch, or a natural rock garden. It's all beautiful and it's all just about a four minute walk from Burgundy House.

The Victoria Breakwater makes a wonderful walk off Dallas Road. It takes you right out into the water, and has great railings so you almost feel like you're walking along the deck of a ship. Fabulous views, and there's a little coffee shop at the start of it that's good for a light snack. (Dogs welcome on a lead along the breakwater but unfortunately not in the coffee shop - just so you know!)

Arts & Culture

The award winning Royal B.C. Museum is not like most museums in that it offers fabulous, interactive displays. You can walk through the streets of a recreated old town Victoria from the turn of the last century. You can explore a First Nation's longhouse and an old fish cannery, or sit in an old movie theatre. It's worth spending some time to enjoy it. It offers the best way to get a really great overview of Victoria's history and it's only an eight minute walk away.

Emily Carr, a famous Canadian Artist, was born and raised in Victoria and her heritage family home is well worth a visit in the summer. The BC Legislature, also called our Parliament Buildings, is a fabulous, iconic piece of architecture on the inner harbour. It hires students to give tours of its interior, I know because I used to be one! It has been extensively renovated since it was designed by Francis Rattenbury more than a hundred years ago, back to its original splendour. A must see, the tours are free, the marble inside is gorgeous as is its library and rotunda. (You can see its dome from your room in Burgundy House, and it's particularly beautiful with all the twinkly lights lit up at night.)
