The C&O Canal Towpath runs from Washington, DC to Cumberland, MD. Bike a section starting in Hancock, MD and cruise by the canal and the Potomac River.

The location where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, known as The Point, offers views of Maryland and Virginia. The Appalachian Trail Visitor Center has exhibits on the long-distance hiking trail. If you want some outdoorsy-fun along with your history, check out River & Trail Outfitters for river raft trips and all manner of rentals (tubes, canoes, bikes) — they even offer sunset/twilight kayaking.
