Guidebook for Kuala Lumpur

Food Scene
Alor Street Hosting a lot of hawker stalls and seafood restaurants, Jalan Alor is one of the most famous roads in Kuala Lumpur for food. Located just behind Jalan Bukit Bintang and a short walk away from Changkat Bukit Bintang, it is a favourite after-clubbing dining spot in the Golden Triangle area. Though the seafood at the air-conditioned restaurants is really good and inexpensive, we highly recommend the hawker food. KL being an immigrant city, the variety of food available is amazing and in Jalan Alor the barbecued meats, noodles and desserts are some of the best (and cheapest) in the city. Most of these dishes cannot be found in fashion-conscious restaurants.

Drinks & Nightlife
Changkat Bukit Bintang nightlife is well-regarded as the ‘it’ party venue in the city’s lively yet fluid clubbing scene. A busy street that’s lined with plenty of international two-storey restobars, snazzy nightclubs, posh cocktail lounges, subdued whisky bars, and lively Irish pubs, it is one of the city’s most vibrant boulevards. Hosting plenty of themed nights, international DJs, and live band performances, it’s safe to say that nightlife in Changkat Bukit Bintang is anything but dull. Amongst the bevy of watering holes available here, there are a few establishments that stand out due to their unique concepts. Stand-up comedy, gay friendly parties and foreign film screenings

Shopping
Petaling Street is chock-full of shops and stalls selling goods and food. A signboard warning against the sale of imitation goods provides an interesting – even ironic – contrast as the whole street is practically littered with fake branded items. Handbags, watches, trainers, clothing – you name it, they’ve got it. Louis Vuitton sits side-by-side with Rolex, and you can sometimes get the latest cinematic releases at less than RM 10 each. For shoppers on a tight budget or those looking for cheap and cheerful ‘branded’ goods, Petaling Street will be their first stop as it offers not just variety but also value for money as the prices can be further whittled down through hard bargaining.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is KL’s haute couture shopping Mecca. It takes a lot to stand out in the city’s mallscape but this shopping centre, which occupies prime real estate along Jalan Bukit Bintang, does just that. Opened in 2007 it has three major sections – a retail mall, an office block and two residential towers. Keeping the city’s fashionistas looking polished, this KL staple is the perfect example of how extravagant some malls can be. It features almost the same staggering square footage as Mid Valley Megamall and 1 Utama and the 1.37 million-sqft white marble complex is a combination of indoor and outdoor shopping venues.
