One of four bridges crossing the Tennessee River downtown Chattanooga to the North Shore neighborhood. Built in the 1800's, it was closed in 1978 and reopened as a pedestrian bridge in 1993. A public memorial near the bridge is underway in tribute to Ed Johnson (lynched on this bridge in 1906) and the lawyers who appealed on his behalf, Noah Parden and Styles Hutchins. Read about Ed Johnson in CONTEMPT OF COURT: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism and at edjohnsonproject.com From the bridge, watch the sun set behind the mountains. Listen to local musicians playing along the bridge. Many families, runners and groups of friends stroll the bridge in the evening. Great eats on both sides of the river. Rembrandt's in the Bluff View Art District is great for dessert and coffee.
