Arts & Culture

It's just at the top of the hill on High Street, and always has a good current exhibit as well as wonderful paintings by Winslow Homer, in the collection. If you can reserve a place on the tour of the Winslow Homer Studio (booked at the museum), taking you to the site of Homer's summer studies of water and waves, you will enjoy a memorable few hours.

Parks & Nature

The Saturday Farmers' Market runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Pride Festival and the Festival of Many Nations are annual events, but this is a lovely place for a walk at any time. Tennis courts and basketball courts are at the western side of the park, along with a playground. At one end of the pond is a wading pool that delights everyone on hot days, and in the winter the pond ice is groomed for skating. The rose garden between High and State Streets has become ever more beautiful after a transition to shrub roses.

Deering Oaks Playground and the Wading Pool

Diagonally across State Street and across the park is the playground with a zip line and, at the far end of the pond, the wading pool is filled every morning by Park Rangers in hot weather.
