Excellent Turkish cuisine, with a range of meze and seafood dishes, meat casseroles and moussaka. Only 5 minutes walk. Good for couples or medium-sized, grown-up gatherings. Highly recommended, but at the higher end of affordable, and may be too pricey for families.

London's first traditional Spanish tapas bar, with brilliantly cooked food, live music and an authentic atmosphere. The tables are tight and it's nearly always busy, so best for couples or small groups. You can snack and drink for cheap, but for a large meal it'll work out slightly more expensive than regular dining.

A quirky mixture of Thai food and traditional English fry-ups! Very affordable, quickly served; excellent for lunch breaks and cheaper evening meals before you go to one of the local theatres, or out for drinks. In the evenings, you can bring your own bottle of wine or beer for a small corkage fee. Popular with couples or small groups, it is fun, local and cheerful, and highly recommended.

The Anchor & Hope is a high-end gastro pub, with a delicate spin on classic British food. From ham and figs to cockles, chorizo and chard broth, it is highly recommended by local chefs and customers, alike. It's first come first serve (so no booking in advance), but there is a lively bar where you can drink while you wait. The prices are at the higher end of affordable, so best for couples or small, grown-up groups. An experience to remember!

Drinks & Nightlife

Very, very local (three doors away!): a typical English pub with the unusual combination of a Thai food restaurant hidden out back. Busy with local office employees after work hours (5pm - 8/9pm), but otherwise quiet enough to go in and sit down and relax with a glass of wine or a pint.

Great atmosphere, with occasional live sports events on their widescreen TV. Otherwise, a warm, open, traditional English pub with friendly staff and affordable prices. Only 1 minutes walk from the house and located next to the Young Vic theatre, opposite a host of restaurants and cafes. Busy after work hours (5pm - 8/9pm), but lots of fun and otherwise quiet and relaxed. Also has outside seating, on the street, and occasional BBQs in the summer.

Waterloo's quaintest backstreet pub, The White Hart is open at midday, with brilliantly cooked, traditional English pub food, from roast dinners to fish 'n' chips and burgers. Busy with local office workers in the evenings (between 5pm - 8/9pm), but if you don't mind that, it's a great atmosphere and a wonderful place to enjoy a quiet drink and a relaxing meal throughout the day. At just a slightly higher price than for regular pub meals, The White Hart is still highly recommended.

The UK’s biggest cinema screen at 540 square metres, the Odeon/BFI Imax stands alone in the centre of a busy roundabout next to Waterloo station. Like a princess in a fairytale, it’s surrounded by a labyrinth of eerie tunnels, which heroic filmgoers must brave if they wish to sample the delights within.

Founded in 1970 as a sort of youth-orientated adjunct to the National Theatre (then located at the Old Vic), the Young Vic has grown in stature to the point of now being one of the most influential theatres in London, if not the world. The heart of the Young Vic programming lies in leftfield productions of great classics. A more vibrant, social crowd than it’s elder counterpart, with restaurant and bar.

Former home to Kevin Spacey and the National Theatre, the Old Vic offers big, serious plays, big, serious stars, and a few surprises: anything from Shakespeare to Beckett to Ibsen, to contemporary musicals. A favourite with tourists and Londoners, alike.

And there is a kitchen there, preparing food only from fresh ingredients in the store to eat in the cafe or take away.
