Sightseeing

In Omalos plateau at the province Viannos there is nothing, except from the small chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit (Agio Pnevma). The plateau is only used by local shepherds during the summer months. On every winter the plateau is dressed in white, making the landscape very beautiful. When the snow melts in the center of the plateau a small lake is formed, which is still there till early summer. The water drains in the ground and enriches the underground water and the springs of province Viannos.

One of the nicest villages in Crete is the forested village of Kato Simi by Viannos in Heraklion Prefecture. Together with the ruined village of Pano Simi, they lie in the heart of the largest pine forest of Crete, with the neighboring Selakano and Malles woods included. The whole area is full of water springs gathering water from the slopes of Dikti Range, that waters plane trees, walnut, cherry and many other species of trees. In autumn they give the area colorful scenery mostly reminiscent of parts of northern Greece. Visitors of the area will have the opportunity to admire the small waterfalls and wander in the amazing forest that covers the village from each side, visit the church Galatoktisti (built with animal milk instead of water). Moreover, it is worth wandering in the ancient sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite beneath below ancient plane trees. Moreover, the visitor can walk to Omalos Plateau with the beautiful Alpine lake by hiking along an old pine-wooded trail and after crossing one of the nicest places of Crete with amazing views around, the “Balcony” of Paradise.

Kalami village: The village Kalami is abandoned, just a single house is still inhabited, but you will hardly meet any people here. The little streets in the village are made for pedestrians and donkeys, a car can actually not pass. However, the village gives a strange impression; the school next to the church, the little river that runs besides the village, the old windmill and a watering system from a bygone era. When you love the old Greek doors; there are plenty of them in these nice narrow streets of Kalami. When you look into an old little house, you can see what is left behind: pans, olive oil jars, old pictures, books, etc. Do not just go into the houses, there are some houses ready to collapse, so be careful! Even in the old school are still some old desks and various other things from the 50s. Most of the people, who lived here, have moved to the surrounding villages. It still remains somehow a little mysterious here. Make sure you have enough batteries for you camera, because this is a photogenic area.

according to the greek mythology, the giant Sarantapihos, who was son of Zeus, once stopped to drink water from the river Kryos or Myrtos, near Ierapetra. His long beard slashed the mountain in two parts and created the canyon of Sarakina. Sarakina is located very close to the traditional village Mythi and near the seasise settlement of Myrtos, where the river Kryos exits to the sea. It is considered by many visitors as the nicest hiking gorge in Crete. Its length reaches only 1.5km, but during this short course the visitor will meet an amazing wonder of the Cretan nature, a natural sculpture formed by water in millions of years. Sarakina has imposing walls reaching 150m height and very narrow passages, usually met in technical gorges (needing canyoneering equipment). Its width ranges from 3 to 10 meters, with only a few points exceeding that. This is a canyon with most of its length being accessible by anyone, with water, ponds and only some climbing points requiring attention. What is really impressive is the large quantity of water almost all year round, that forms very beautiful waterfalls and ponds, ideal for swimming, even in summer. In winter, it is impossible to cross the gorge without getting wet. During the course one has to climb, come through huge boulders and rocky bridges. In tough positions, there are stairs carved in stone and some tree trunks for easiest climbing.
