Drinks & Nightlife

Chinatown is pretty sleepy at night, but the Li-Po Lounge is always open late. A great little dive bar for a nightcap! Try the Chinese Mai Tai!

An old-school tiki bar that is practically a San Francisco institution. A lounge band plays on a boat in the middle of the built in-pond, and it "rains" every 15 minutes. Beware of the scorpion bowl!

Sightseeing

Walk down Washington Street to the Bay at night to see the Bay Lights up close. The Bay Lights are a monumental light sculpture and art installation on the western span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge by light artist Leo Villarreal. It includes 25,000 individual white LEDs along 1.8 miles (2.9 km) of the cables on the north side of the suspension span of the bridge between Yerba Buena Island and San Francisco. The installation is controlled via a computer and displays changing patterns that are not meant to repeat.

Unfortunately, there's no observation deck, but it's really all about the iconic pyramid architecture from the outside anyway. Now the second tallest building in San Francisco (it got surpassed by the Salesforce Tower in 2016). But still the best looking skyscraper in my book!

The custard tarts are legendary. Beware of long lines. Go towards the end of the day, and if they seem "closed" (but you can see them inside) don't be afraid to knock on the door!

Chinatown is filled with mediocre Chinese restaurants, but this isn't one of them. Specializing in seafood, what this place lacks in ambiance (it's a greasy spoon with horrible fluorescent lighting) it more than makes up for in delicious Chinese seafood dishes. Plus, unlike most of Chinatown, it's open late -- until 3 AM on weekends!

San Francisco is famous for its "Mission-style" burritos, but that doesn't mean you need to go all the way to the Mission to get one. If you're staying in Chinatown, this taqueria is a quick walk away through the Stockton Tunnel, and their burritos are still damn tasty.

Hey, I like bubble milk tea as much as the next person, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna wait in a 30-minute line just to get an overpriced boba drink. They're good, but not THAT good ... so if you see more than 20 people in line, come back on the late side. They're open until 9pm Tues-Thurs, till 10pm on Saturday, and 6pm on Sunday. Closed Mondays.

As the neighborhood's alfresco living room, Portsmouth Square is busy from early morning, when locals gracefully practice tai chi, to the afternoon, when buskers play the erhu fiddle and games of cards can turn boisterous.
