The Gruta das Torres Visitor Center is an example of sustainable use of a natural resource for recreational purposes and environmental awareness, as the visit does not disturb its natural elements.
Gruta das Torres is the largest lava tube in Portugal, with a length of 5150 meters, forming part of the Lajidos - Gruta das Torres formation, inserted in the Mountain Volcanic Complex. It is estimated that it formed around 1500 years ago during an eruption originating in Cabeço Bravo.
The visit is absolutely pioneering in Portugal, following the cavity along 450 meters and lasting approximately one hour.

Great views & hiking trail very close to Casa Pereirinha. This route begins next to the Captain's Lagoon, located in the central plateau in the interior of the Island of Pico and ends in the Cais do Pico (trail passes home approximately 700m). The first part of the trail is carried out on a broader dirt track between some pastures where there are, among other endemic species, some large Cedar-do-Mato. After about 1.5 km, you round the Cabeço do Piquinho and then you will reach a wonderful view to the north coast of the island of Pico, emphasizing the final destination of the walk - Cais do Pico. If the visibility is good you can also see the islands of São Jorge and Graciosa. You will then enter a pasture on the right and, following the wall, you will descend to a footpath completely shaded by endemic species, among them the Serra de la Sierra, Cedro-do-Mato, Folhado, Sanguinho and the Tamujo. Closer to the ground are smaller species such as cape's weed and various species of orchids. It is an almost virgin Laurissilva forest and it is extremely important not to get out of the way marked to avoid damage resulting from trampling or breaking branches in this fragile ecosystem. You will be able to have encounters with several birds of the forest, among them Estrelinha, the smallest bird of Europe, easily recognizable by the small yellow spot on the head. When you leave the endemic forest, you can rest in the snack bar "A Fonte", where there is an old drinking water tank that provided Pico dock. Continue along a wider path and, at the entrance of the Pico Wharf, you will find on your right the entrance of the Canarian cave. The course ends a little further, next to the Convent of San Pedro de Alcantara.

Ponta da Ilha Hiking Trail. On this walk on the easternmost point of Pico we discover a rather difficult fishing path along the rugged lava coast. The starting place for this walk is the small fishing village of Manhenha. It goes slightly uphill along a gravel path until an asphalt road brings us to Piedade where something can also be enjoyed in the local café. A little further we follow a small asphalt road and you descend to Calhau. We now follow the coast and a little further the difficult and demanding fishing path starts. It is best to choose your own way over the sharp and bumpy lava stones. If you pay attention, you can follow the markings, but it is not always clear. After about 45 minutes you will see some houses and you will arrive in the hamlet of Engrade. Here you can choose, either take the second part of the fishing path on the left back to the coast, or choose the alternative straight on along a gravel path back to Manhenha. (- 15min) If you choose to follow the fishing path like us, then a little further at the farol de Ponta da Ilha, the lighthouse at the end of Pico. A little further you will arrive back at the starting place. Do not underestimate this walk, the coastal path is heavy and difficult but you will be rewarded with some beautiful views over the top of beautiful Pico.
