Cross the street to taste the best coffee in the neighborhood and possibly DC. You will need to join the line keeping 6 feet apart but it clears quickly. Try some of their savory scones. Run into your neighbors.

DC's number 1 restaurant for many years is just a short walk away but make sure you have a reservation well in advance. We love their testing menu and wine pairing.

Another popular place for larger groups and with plenty of outdoor seating (important in the age of Covid) 5 minutes away. Excellent mainly Mexican. Don't miss home made chips with queso and happy hour discounts for group drinks.

Classic and buzzy diner, one of local favorites. Check out Tryst next door (same owner) if you want to work surrounded by buzz or are travelling alone. It's a place to see and be seen for younger crowds or anyone looking to meet locals.

Neighborhoods

Don't miss walking 10 minutes to the circle itself and checking out places nearby all listed separately in this guide. This is the heart of DC and more 'local' than the touristy Georgetown (which is also not too far to walk to).

Just up the street on 18th is the Adam's Morgan with all of its buzz (mainly bars and restaurants) recommended to younger crowds. The later you go, the crazy the evening/night scene. Except for The Diner which is great for brunch and convenient for families during the day. Adams Morgan also boasts some shisha smoke lounges and an odd curio shop.

Sightseeing

DC landmark book store and restaurant which you should not miss. Grab a book, one of the excellent parties and some coffee and just take in the people and this DC's landmark. This is the place where you are most likely to run into one of many DC 'celebrities' or politicians or journalists living locally (who still like to be seen picking up a good book).

This is the closest playground located on 17th and P (except for the Ross School Playground on 17th and R which is even closer but only open to public after school hours). It lacks shade on hot days but it latex surface is very popular with toddlers. When you get tired, you are close to the Whole Foods on P and 15th and the Commissary right across from Whole Food which is our favorite weekend brunch place (order any of their egg dishes).

You are in DC, on the same the grid as the White House, so don't forget to stroll down the street you are staying on to say hello to your most famous/notorious neighbor. You have a particular advantage or being able to walk down without worrying about parking nearby. And you can stop by several other landmarks and restaurants on the way (20 minutes brisk walk).

All you need is your feet and perhaps a bike to rent

From here, you are a walk away from some of the best DC restaurants, monuments and history. Don't bother with parking and cars, but if you choose to do so, Car Share and Zipcars are conveniently available everywhere. You don't need a map either. Just turn left on the 17thwhen exiting the front year and keep walking, You will pass the National Geographic building (you might be in luck for one of their special exhibitions, but gift store with easy street access is worth visiting; keep walking until you hit the Lafayette Square opening onto the White House. Behind it is the National Mall. Enjoy!

Some of the best DC restaurants are a short walk away

I hope you enjoy eating out or ordering food. As you may have noticed, the galley kitchen is small. But you're in luck - I listed many restaurant above but you are very close to the best restaurants in NW DC. They are on the 14th (Le Diplomate, Tico's, Barcelona Wine Bar), 17th (Komi, Little Serow, Sushi Taro) and 18th streets restaurants (Lauriol, The Diner, Tryst) and you can walk to all of the ones listed.

National Museum of African American History and Culture

This historic, relatively new museum is open during Covid -19 but requires reservation (free). Walk over (the National Mall is a fairly large area but the Museum is a short walk behind the White House which is 20 min away). Learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience and how it shaped our nation (it includes some painful reminders and exhibits, but it is exceptionally interesting with large, solemn spaces and interactive features (especially great for kids). Food at the mall is not great, except in this museum, but may not be available during Covid-19).

Bring comfortable foot wear, and travel light

If you booked my place, you will be staying in the heart of historic Dupont, Adams Morgan, and will be able to walk to some of DC's famous landmarks, museums, and best restaurants. So, the most important thing is to bring comfortable shoes, perhaps some flip flops for DC's hot, humid summers (you will run into folks in suits and ties wearing their flip flops (with their less comfortable shoes in the office or briefcase). My place is also small but has everything, including washer and dryer, so no need to haul/pack a lot of stuff.
