“Located in the Pisgah National Forest just north of Brevard. 7.6 miles from the junction of US Highways 64 and 276, is Sliding Rock, one place where you’re invited to take the plunge down a 50-foot slippery cascade into the 50-60 degree, 7-foot deep pool. There are 2 observation platforms, and lifeguards on duty during the season. This is a heavily used recreation area, so it’s suggested you come early. It’s suggested, too, that you wear old shorts and old sneakers if you choose to take the plunge. Nominal admission charge for sliders but no cost to watch. Lifeguards on duty in season.”

“LENGTH: 2.3 MILES RATING: MODERATE DOGS: ON LEASH FACILITIES: BATHROOMS The hike visits two beautiful waterfalls, the multi-tiered second falls and the tall cascades of the upper falls. The trail winds through a stream-filled valley filled with wild blackberry and blueberry bushes that burst with fruit in the late summer months. Graveyard Fields makes for one amazing, unforgettable hike. A map at the parking area shows the Graveyard Fields trail system. The set of steps to the right of the map is the start of the trail. After crossing the bridge, the main trail goes left and upstream. A 0.25-mile trail to the right will take you to the bottom of the Lower Falls, which is a moderate descent. Be careful the rocks around waterfalls are very slippery. The main trail will take you through open, grassy areas, and past nice pools for wading on a hot summer day. After one mile, you will see the trail to the Upper Falls. The main trail crosses the Yellow stone Prong and returns to the parking lot. Directions: This trail begins at the Graveyard Fields Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. From the U.S. Highway 276 junction with the parkway, turn left or south on the Parkway and continue to milepost 418.8 (about 6 miles).”

“Although it's a little farther away (about 35 minutes), this park is one of our favorites. Just take 64 west and stay on it (that'll require a left turn at the first traffic light, and a second left once you're in Brevard, just follow the signs for 64 west) a little over 20 miles. Once you get to the Lake Toxaway/Sapphire area, turn left onto NC 281. Go about a mile and turn left onto Grassy Ridge Rd. The park has an awesome visitor center, and just one trail - about 3 miles round trip to Rainbow Falls, and another 1/2 mile each way to Turtleback Falls. The hike is moderate, enjoyable and with a nice swimming hole at the top, with the option to slide down Turtleback Falls (a 20-foot drop) for the daring. It's a hike our whole family enjoys, especially in the summer when there's often a gelato stand in the trailhead parking lot (useful for bribing children to finish the hike). ”

“Skinny Dip Falls. Take Hwy 276 to the Blue Ridge Parkway and head south. Pull off near mile marker 417, which is near the Looking Glass Rock overlook. A moderate, short hike will take you to a natural waterfall and swimming hole on the Yellowstone Prong of the Big East Fork of the Pigeon River. Take a cool dip or sun yourself on the rocks. If you continue on the trail past Skinny Dip Falls on the Mountains to Sea trail you will reach Graveyard Fields where you will find more hiking trails and waterfalls.”
