“The Basilica Cistern was the largest underground cistern, it was used to supply water to the city of Constantinople. The Byzantines had in purpose built large cisterns to store water in order not to be in short supply of water during the summer. The tank is a large underground room with columns that are 8 meters high and water basins. The lighting of columns combined with classical music playing in the background prevails a mystical atmosphere. Open all week from 9am to 5.30pm. “Vividly coloured spices are displayed alongside jewel-like lokum (Turkish delight) at this Ottoman-era marketplace, providing eye candy for the thousands of tourists and locals who make their way here every day. Stalls also sell caviar, dried herbs, honey, nuts and dried fruits. The number of stalls selling tourist trinkets increases annually, yet this remains a great place to stock up on edible souvenirs, share a few jokes with vendors and marvel at the well-preserved building. The market was constructed in the 1660s as part of the New Mosque, with rent from the shops supporting the upkeep of the mosque as well as its charitable activities, which included a school, hamam and hospital. The market's Turkish name, the Mısır Çarşısı (Egyptian Market), references the fact that the building was initially endowed with taxes levied on goods imported from Egypt. In its heyday, the bazaar was the last stop for the camel caravans that travelled the Silk Road from China, India and Persia. On the west side of the market there are outdoor produce stalls selling fresh foodstuff from all over Anatolia, including a wonderful selection of cheeses. Also here is the most famous coffee supplier in İstanbul, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi, established over 100 years ago. This is located on the corner of Hasırcılar Caddesi, which is full of shops selling food and kitchenware.”

“Also called the Mother Fortress of Tbilisi, Narikala is an ancient symbol of Tbilisi’s defence. The fortress was established in the 4th century, around the period when the city itself was founded. It was then known as Shuris-tsikhe (Invidious Fort). The name Narikala is said to derive from a Persian word for citadel, but another theory says was the name that Mongols used, meaning “little fortress”. It was expanded considerably by the Arabs during the 7th and 8th centuries. The Arabs built the Emir’s palace within its walls. King David further extended the Builder the fortress in th 11th century. Most of the existing fortifications date from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1827 it was damaged by an earthquake and was not resorted. St. Nikolos church, inside the fortress walls, dates from the 12th century. It was renovated in 1996. Narikala offers you some of the best panoramas of the city. We’d also advise you to take a walk along the Narikala Tourist route, a 1500 metre trail that runs from the top of the ridge near the Mother Georgia statue, around the fortress and down into Old Town to near the entrance to the Botanical Gardens. It offers stunning views at every turn and is a particular delight at night when the city lights shine below.”

It is located between the two rivers Vlihia and Kirata (today Katsambas), with easy access to the sea, but also to the interior of Crete. According to tradition, it was the seat of King Minos and the capital of his state. Knossos was an important city in antiquity, with a continuous life from the Neolithic to the 5th century AD. century and there was built the first important Minoan palace of Crete. This is the most important example of the Minoan civilization, which lived in its prime from 1700 to 1450 BC. The area of the palace of Knossos is connected with fascinating myths, such as the Labyrinth with Minotaur and Daedalus with Icarus. Even in later periods it plays an important role and develops particularly, as in the Hellenistic era.”
