“A day trip to Munising to visit this National Lakeshore is well worth the trip! See some of the most spectacular views Lake Superior has to offer. You can stop at the National Park office when you get to Munising for maps and suggestions for hiking. If hiking is not your thing, taking a boat cruise or kayaking along the cliffs is also amazing. If you do head to Munising, be sure to stop in Falling Rock Cafe for some coffee and ice cream, browse the wonderful selection of new and used books they have. They have frequent local live music as well!”

“An absolute must to visit. Drive, bike, run or walk around the island. But be sure to stop at Sunset Point and get out to explore a bit. Walk out to the blackrocks area, walk on some of the oldest rocks in the world and watch people jump into the lake from the local favorite cliff jumping spot. The best local views of Lake Superior, the rugged shores and cliffs. Ice cream shop, bandshell concerts, playground and nature center here as well. No cars in winter, but you can still walk or snowshoe around the island. ”

“(2.5mi, moderate): Trail, with many stairs, follows the river offering views of waterfalls and rapids. A 50-foot waterfall mysteriously disappears into a hole in the bedrock. Try your luck a catching brook and rainbow trout. Directions: 4.5mi west of Hovland on Highway #61 to Judge C.R. Magney State Park. (5min drive from Hovland)”

Nature Preserve
“This nature preserve loops all around Bete Grise. Two of our favorite hikes: The Bare Bluff hike is a moderately difficult hike over a forested hill, with gorgeous views of Bete Grise and the south side of the peninsula. The Botany Trail is an easy stroll through dunes and marsh, bringing you to a secluded, sandy beach. Our kids' favorite beach.”

“Trails that go in every direction, but all lead to a must see 3.1 mile loop feeding into Pincushion overlook. Also a great place to mountain bike and cross-country ski. If you are feeling adventurous, take the superior hiking trail down (behind) Pincushion. The long set of stairs leads you the Devil Track canyon- beautiful swimming holes abound (and two awesome campsites). ”
