“It was in Ubud that the modern Balinese art movement started, when artists first began to abandon purely religious themes and court subjects for scenes of everyday life. This museum set in a lovely formal garden has four buildings displaying works from all schools and periods of Balinese art, with a focus on modern masters including I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (1862–1978), Ida Bagus Made (1915–1999) and I Gusti Made Kwandji (1936–2013). All works are labelled in English. ”

古迹

Temple
“Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave was built in the 9th century, it served as a sanctuary. It is not clear why this site exists for what purpose. It is said to be a place where monks meditate and practice. Even though Goa Gajah translates to ‘Elephant Cave’, you won’t find any pachyderms here. Various theories suggest the origin of the name. One is based on the Petanu River being originally called ‘Lwa Gajah’ before it came to be called Petanu River. Other sources state that the ‘Gajah’ or elephant aspect came in from the stone figure inside the cave which depicted the Hindu god Ganesh, who is characterised bearing an elephant’s head. What to see? There are two sides to the temple so make sure you see both as the waterfall, reflection pool and gardens are spectacular ”

Hindu Temple
“Gunung Kawi in Tampaksiring Village - 11th Century candi (pronounced chandi, meaning tombs) of a Royal Balinese Family. Archeologists believe the candies commemorate the King, Anak Wungsu, and his Queens. There are three sets of tombs: Royal Tombs (King and 4 favourite wives), Queens Tombs and the 10th Tomb. All of the candi are carved from the riverside cliff face and have beautiful reliefs of temple facades. The candi don’t have any bones or ashes, but seem to have been erected to complete the religious rites of honouring the spirits of the deceased. (30 minutes north/east of Ubud)”

Temple
“Gunung Kawi is an 11th-century temple and funerary complex in Tampaksiring[1]:180 north east of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia.,[2] that is spread across either side of the Pakerisan river. It comprises 10 rock-cut candi (shrines) that are carved into some 7-metre-high (23 ft) sheltered niches of the sheer cliff face. These funeral monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens. On the east side there are five temples that are dedicated, according to one theory, to King Udayana, his queen Mahendradatta, and their sons Airlanga, Anak Wungsu, and Marakata. The temples on the west side are dedicated, according to the same theory, to the king's minor queens or concubines. Inscription: on the north shrine (east side) a legible inscription reads: "Haji Lumahing Jalu," meaning "the king made a temple here."”
