Hello & welcome to Istanbul :)
We are in Balat, a neighborhood of narrow & winding streets & colorful buildings. The room is in a renovated old house, an authentic three story Greek house with wooden floors & ceilings. The room has a private bathroom
The space is part of who we are. Neither of us are from Istanbul. We arrived to this city many years ago where we meet straight on with its energy and force. The feeling was overwhelming and made us fall for her... After years of traveling back and forth, we finally found a place in beautiful Balat where we hope to transmit that same feeling to newcomers.
Balat is the old Greek and Jewish quarter. Three, four story colorful old buildings pave the small streets winding up towards Fatih and/or winding down to the Golden Horn. Our house is one of them: a high ceiling brick Greek house with wooden floors and a sea view. On the second floor you can find the living room and the kitchen; the other two rooms being on the top floor. You will be occupying one of them.
We chose Balat mainly because it being off the travel path a bit. Based on location we get mainly travelers and not typical tourists. The house is LGBTQ friendly and tolerant toward religions even though we are not really interested in them. I´m a cyclotourist and Bilinc an activitist. The house goes very much with our lifestyle.
My mum (yes, I invited her to move in with me :) ) also lives in the premises. She speaks Spanish and some English. She is always happy to be of assistance.
Turkish, English, Spanish, French, Italian and some Russian and Kurdish are spoken at home.
Please feel free to use anything in the house: the kitchen, the washing machine, etc. We like sharing in the house :)
We are working people so we are away from home for the most part of the day. Plus we travel a lot as well. My mum usually stays at home so you can count on her for quick information.
We enjoy interacting with our guests of course but we are very respectful of their privacy.
We truly love Istanbul and as such we aim to be an environment friendly household. We don't use heavy chemicals for cleaning and are very happy taking people to local markets (not to be missed, Balat´s Sunday Organic Market) to get fruit and vegetables directly from local producers.
We enjoy going for walks around lesser known viewpoints and taking part in the Critical Mass cycling events. You will be more than welcome to join :)
You can behave as you do in your own home. The apartment offers you privacy and everything you need to make your stay enjoyable.
There is no curfew. You will have your own sets of keys so you may come and go as you like.
We try to respect others and the environment .. please try not to leave lights or electric appliances on when there is nobody at home or have water run unnecessarily .. thank you
And we don´t appreciate nationalistic talks.
