If you want to avoid the tourists and experience real Balinese life, come to Amalapura. On top of that it is in a palace with former King's grand son and his wife (another Princess). Yes the room is basic and Amalpura can get very hot during day time. The room is air conditioned and the palace ground is wonderful to roam about. Trisna's parents are delightfully giving people. They speak and understand enough English that we had a great 4 days with them. If you have your own transport, this is the place to be to explore the beaches and palaces of Bali. If you do not, like we did not and we wanted to just chill out for a few days, it will be a fascinating experience as well. Trisna's father, Agung drove us to two different water palaces that his Grandfather had built. It gave us a different dimension to these two palaces. Do take his tour. It costs only $10 per destination but to be able to have your own private parking spot, not to have to pay any entrance fees, and to see everyone smiling to Agung was so special for us. For hot water shower you will need to use the other bathroom across the garden but that is a part of Balinese life and it was so hot that we were happy with cold shower. Trisna came on a Sunday and we spent the entire afternoon talking with her. What a beautiful energy!!!! A single mother, educated, independent, filled with life. Priceless addition to our life. One word of caution: if you are an animal lover, it will be difficult for you (like it was for us) to see their dog in a cage 24 hours a day. Trisna does not like it. She has a dog and she spoils her dog the way we all do in the West but she had lost the battle with her parents. However, if we all write about it a bit and she keeps on translating our discomfort to them a bit by bit, perhaps one day we can change their mind and the dog will be given away to an appropriate owner. We can not change a few hundred year old culture in one day but we know how kind Agung and Ibu Agung are otherwise. I have a lot of hope that one day they will hear all of us. We had fantastic local food for less than $1 per person. They keep giving us fruit, including fresh Rambutan from the tree. The day we left, Agung and Ibu woke up early to see us off. We have a very special memory about Amlapura and we will be Trisna's friends for life.
