Victor and his family have an amazing coco farm where he built the cabin we stayed at. If you don't have a car it is best to plan that you will pay around 30-40 US dollars once you get off public transportation to hike up the mountain where he is located. I think in Costa Rica, his place was the highlight of our trip. I was cured by his mom naturally( special tea she grows in the backyard, and special massage in the pressure point for a fish poison I had prior to getting to them). The cabin was clean and comfortable. They cook food for you but you have to let them know at what time you would like to have it. Delicious meals every day. They are very loving and attentive to your needs. Victor and his family are perfect example of living sustain ably. They grow what they eat. I will be back for sure.

We had a wonderful stay at Victor's. The cabin was lovely and clean and the cabins and property as well as Victors families home, all of which he built, are even more beautiful than the pictures. His familiy was very friendly and kind and gracious especially with our very limited Spanish speaking. In the morning after an amazing breakfast and coffee Victor showed us his cocoa plantation and how the beans are grown, fermented and dried. I would highly recommend a stay at Victors .

I would give Victor, his wife Lizbeth, and Chocolate in Paradise more than 5 stars if I could! We had an incredible time and our last few days here near Bijagua were the highlight of our whole trip. Victor and Lizbeth were wonderfully accommodating, genuine, and interesting people. I learned so much from our conversations and was beyond impressed at everything that these two built with their own two hands (pretty much everything you see on the property)! Lizbeth also offers mouthwatering home-made Costa Rican food that is sure to satiate any appetite. I feel refreshed and motivated to learn something new after this lovely experience! As far as the property, it is beautiful, secluded, and extremely unique-- you'll have the chance to learn from Victor all about how organic, artisanal chocolate is made. The cabins are also cozy, comfortable, and clean: we slept very well here. A few practical notes for potential visitors-- this property is a few kilometers outside of Bijagua. We did not have a car, but there are a number of daily buses that run from Cañas to Upala (or vice versa) and stop off at Bijagua in between. Upon our arrival, Victor picked us up promptly as he offers a taxi service to his property. If you a considering a car it would be ideal, as it will allow you to easily explore nearby areas as well-- you will have to drive down a dirt/rocky road but it doesn't necessarily have to be a 4x4 as long as it isn't in the middle of the heavy rainy season. If you come without a car, come ready to relax and embrace the beauty of the surroundings and understand that travel options are limited. This, however, was the charm of the place for us. With no wifi and no other distractions, you may find yourself staring for hours at the breathtaking tropical foliage or singing to the birds as you relax in the hammock. For those who are not Spanish speakers, Victor and Lizbeth do not speak very much English. They have many interesting stories to tell and knowledge to offer those who can communicate in Spanish, but I have no doubt that they would still put a smile on their faces as they would do their best to communicate to any guest who comes to their property. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience to anyone considering a few days in paradise!

Staying at Chocolate in Paradise was an amazing experience. Victor is a gracious and welcoming host, despite our limited Spanish, he could not have been more kind to my family. He arranged a horseback ride for our family around the community and we got a real since of the rural Costa Rican lifestyle. He gave us a tour of his cocoa farm and even let our daughter catch a fish from his tilapia pond. In addition to breakfast, we had lunch and dinner at Victor's and his wife cooked the best traditional Costa Rican cuisine that we had on our trip. The amenities are definitely rustic, but that was part of the charm of the location. If you are looking for a posh resort, Chocolate in Paradise is not for you, but if you are looking for a truly unique, rural community experience than I highly recommend staying with Victor.

Listing description was accurate. Beautiful setting but no amenities. Perfect for people seeking quiet and relaxation.

We felt welcome right away! This place is truly a paradise. We were a little nervous about staying somewhere with only a couple reviews but it was such an incredible experience. Victor and his wife were lovely, welcoming, kind, and shared so much about their home & the cacao process. They don't speak very much English which wasn't a problem for us but just a warning that it might be a different experience if you can't communicate. The bungalow was wonderful and the land was probably the prettiest place I've ever been. They made us dinner and included breakfast in the price as well. We left with cacao & a few chocolate bars - such a memorable day/night!
