I stayed at Marcelo's apartment during the World Cup, a very busy time for any Airbnb host in this location. Yet, I wouldn't stay here again. The Good: Price/Location. Marcelo is a caring person and wants you to have a good time in Rio. If you have questions about the city, he will gladly assist you. Claudia prepares great Brazilian meals for you (lunch and dinner) for an arranged price. It's cheaper than eating out everyday and a true representation of Brazilian cuisine. The Bad: You will share this apartment with his family: his sister (Claudia), husband (Robson), husband's son (Jordan), and Marcelo himself. They live in a separate room and some sleep on the floor in the living room so it gets crowded quickly. Ezra (affectionately known as "Old Man") will be in the room with you. He's irritable and it is uncomfortable if you do something he doesn't like. He may curse at you in Portuguese. His bed sits at the foot of both bunks so climbing over him while he is sleeping is troublesome. Marcelo is the listed host, but Robson makes the rules. Marcelo is the errand boy. If Robson doesn't like the way your bed is arranged/you leave your things out, Robson will be sure to get in your face. As a personal trainer for bodybuilders, he doesn't get much lip from guests who disagree. The bathroom is small...phone booth small. It houses a washing machine, a dryer, a "sink", a shower, and a toilet. The shower doesn't hold all the water in so you are asked to squeegee water into the floor drain/wipe up the rest with a towel after every use. The washing machine leaks. You aren't allowed to shower if the dryer, washer, the other shower, or microwave is in use. Ask before showering. No hot water. The mattresses are outdated. You can feel the wooden slats on your back when you sleep. The window stays open: rain or shine. If your bed is next to the window like mine was, the bed gets wet for the sake of "room ventilation". If you try to shut it, even partially, it will be opened by Marcelo or Robson immediately. The solution? A small (URL HIDDEN) the towel gets soaked and then soaks your bed? With this genius logic, you have just created the perfect environment (damp, dark, warm) for spiders, mosquitoes, and roaches. During the rainy season, mosquitoes, spiders, and roaches are common. 19 bites total (mostly spiders), last I counted, even after bug repellent. You will be asked NOT to lounge in the living room. I started charging my computer and using it in the living room, I was asked to leave and told I was in the way even though no one was in there. If something of Marcelo's is lost/broken by you, you are asked to replace it. Fair. If something of yours is lost/broken by them, it will not be replaced. Unfair.
