Not sure if words can describe our 4 days here…
When we first arrived I was really surprised—I looked on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps beforehand and saw the area roads and fields looking very dry. It was actually lush and long green grass, woods and trees everywhere. The farm itself was so much more beautiful than the photos! Easy to find with smartphone/GPS, and Christine greeted us in the garden with delicious homemade applejuice. Our room was on ground floor, clean and cool from outside. All modern accommodations; sit down shower was fantastic, big bed, everything decorated modestly—really made us feel at home. Tea and coffee station with two small homemade chocolates waiting for us. If we needed anything more from Christine, she was available in the main part of the house or by phone. The walls were redone, you really notice the quietness right away!
Breakfast: if you appreciate only bio ingredients & homemade baking, these meals are absolute heaven. The organic coffee and tea selection was so nice, I went in town to buy some for home! Each morning Christine had different traditional bakes and french cheeses to taste, and new selections of her homemade jam (we also bought a few jars from her!) Always a fresh homemade loaf of bread on the table…I can’t rate this breakfast high enough.
After eating Christine came back to ask if we needed any tips or recommendations—she gave us a map to walk along the shores of la Rance, and she wrapped up our leftovers for a picnic! Small towns like Pleudihen (20 min drive) up through Saint-Suliac, even to St Malo…these tips were real pleasures of exploring the area.
Combourg is the nearby town, one of Brittany’s unsung wonders with a 1000-year-old Chateau, still lake, and cobblestone roads (4 min drive). Many superb restaurants & well priced, and shops with artisan goods/ treats. Our first night we ate outside on one of the many tables and lounge chairs throughout the property. Take-out pizzas and apple cidre from one of the shops in town! There is a fridge to keep all your new found treasures outside the room.
We were close to everything. Dinan (20 mins), St Malo (40 mins), Cancale is 10 min drive from there, Mont St Michel (30 mins)…we did them all in one day! But our greatest time was an entire day at the farm, lying in the sun reading and having our picnic. There is so much space in the yard, with silence, birds chirping….bliss
As my partner and I travel the world for work, this was one of our best vacations we’ve had. Christine was the perfect host, available but allotted us all the privacy we needed. Although we came to sight-see and travel around, we were grateful to have vacation from our vacation. Will certainly be returning next year, probably with friends! I can imagine the farm in autumn colors, or bits of snow…and the flowers of spring! Gorgeous B&B, thank you a million times Christine.
