Hidden down a track 2 miles from Carron village is this traditional little farmhouse. Situated in the heart of the Burren on a 300 acre organic farm, the cottage is simply decorated with painted concrete floors, white walls & fuschia windows. Close to the Burren Perfumery, Hazelmountain Chocolate & Poulnabrone. Can be rented on it's own or with it's neighbour, The Long Cottage.
This self catering cottage is a place to really get away from it all. Due to our remote location there is no Internet or TV signal and very little mobile phone coverage. It is perfect for walking, cycling, seeing the Burren's flowers and accessing all the outdoor activities the Burren has to offer. Your own transport is 100% necessary as the closest pub/restaurant is 2 miles away.
Hidden off the road, the two cottages at Poulaphouca are peaceful and secluded and buried in the heart of the UNESCO Geopark that is The Burren. 10 minutes from the sea and within easy reach of Galway and Limerick, your cottage is centrally located for day trips to Connemara and the Aran Islands (and even Cork and Dublin) while also being completely off the beaten track.
There is great walking right from your door and the back door and small utility room offer a place to put dirty boots and wet gear. Bicycles can be hired locally and even delivered to the cottage or another location. 2 miles down the road is the Burren Outdoor Education Centre which offers half and full day outdoor activities and there are also many other local providers for guided walks, fishing, kayaking, climbing, caving, riding, surfing etc.
The cottage is simply decorated to create a clean, bright, attractive and comfortable place to stay that is reminiscent of the cottage's past history as a family home and farmhouse. For full privacy in the evenings there are shutters both downstairs and up, and on wild nights there is nothing better than shutting yourself in and lighting a fire in the traditional iron stove.
The beds are comfortable with quality mattresses, mattress protectors and either wool or feather duvets and feather pillows. All the bedlinen is at least 400 thread count egyptian cotton. Bedrooms have wall hanging space for clothes, chests of drawers, mirrors, bedside tables and lamps, hot water bottles and a wastepaper basket. There is also a hairdryer.
The bathroom has a rug plus a bathmat and space for hanging towels on the back door.
The sitting room has a small sofa and two armchairs, side lamps, a rug plus books, games, cards and an information file.
We do not supply breakfast as this is self catering accomodation. Instead we supply a number of amenities that an only be bought in bulk, sufficient for a shorter stay, and to get you started if you are staying for a longer period. These include: firelighters, dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid, salt, pepper, sugar, dried herbs, olive oil, tea and coffee.
Briquettes for the fire are available from all local villages including Daly's Pub in Bell Harbour (closest and the Guinness is good too!)
Guests have access to all parts of the cottage. However, the cottage is offered at a discounted rate for two people sharing one room so only that room will be made up for you to sleep in. If you require use of the second room please book for four people to get the correct rate.
Guests also have private outdoor space behind the cottage.
The area in front of the cottage is shared space with guests from the neighbouring cottage. For this reason please park close to your own cottage which is on the Left.
When you arrive we ask you to come to our cottage to check in and collect keys. Either Enda or I will then take you up to your cottage a few minutes away and settle you in.
We ask that you deliver the keys back to us at our cottage when you leave.
In between we are always happy to help guests so just call us if you need advice, directions or just want to ask questions about the area.
For additional guests, the cottage may be booked in conjunction with 'Secluded Burren Lodge' and 'Simply Beautiful Burren Cottage w/great views', as well as 'Burren Farm Camping' depending on availability. Please contact us for details.
There are currently no clothes washing facilities at the cottage. We can offer these from our own house for longer term guests at a cost of €2.50 per wash or dry. Alternatively washing can be hung out on the washing line.
As already mentioned there is no TV or Internet and very little mobile phone signal. Due to our location (between mountains) we cannot receive a direct signal from any of these service providers and until Eircom decide to upgrade their lines in this area this method of Internet/phone/tv is not a possibility either. It's one of the difficulties - and the beauty - of staying in the Burren :)
We are 2 miles from Carron village where there is a pub but no shops. There are shops in all the surrounding villages each c.15 mins away. The local pub in Bell Harbour (under 10 mins) has some basics including peat briquettes and locally grown veg in season.
Please relax and enjoy the house as if you were a guest in a good friend's home - i.e. don't do anything that would lose you the friendship! Below are a few ground rules if in doubt.
PETS: Pets are allowed WITH PRIOR PERMISSION ONLY. This is to ensure that we don't have pets in both cottages at the same time. All pets must be fully house trained, wormed, treated for fleas and are not allowed on the furniture under any circumstances. Any damage or extra cleaning caused by pets will result in a claim of the full deposit. In addition as we are situated in a farming area with both cattle and sheep, dogs must be kept under control outside and are your responsibility. We prefer no more than one animal and strictly do not allow more than two. Please contact us to discuss. Cat owners please be aware that there are other cats and dogs in the immediate locality (some feral) as well as a pet fox.
CHECK-IN: is between 5 & 7pm unless otherwise agreed at the time of booking. During the winter we would recommend arriving earlier to ensure arrival in the light as we are off the road and there is no signage.
DEPARTURE: There is no need to clean before you leave, but we do ask that you leave the cottage neat and tidy and clean up any mess including your breakfast, the fridge and the oven if you have used it.
RUBBISH DISPOSAL: There is a strict rubbish collection policy in this area and limited bin space. Due to this we ask that all recyclables are cleaned, dried, separated from general rubbish and put in the bin provided. Further guidelines are available in the cottage. Failure to comply with this request will result in a charge (minimum €20 + €5 per incorrect bag) to your deposit to cover the expense and inconvenience of sorting through or disposing of your rubbish correctly.
BREAKAGES: If you break or damage anything please let us know. Items that are replaced or paid for before departure will not be charged for.
SMOKING: There is no smoking in the cottage. Please clear away any smoking rubbish from outside the house.
USE OF THE FIREPLACE: The stove uses peat briquettes (or traditional peat) only. It is not suitable for coal and wood can spit and cause damage to the rug which would be charged for.
NEIGHBOURS: Please be aware that there may be other guests in the cottage next door to you. If so, please be considerate about noise levels, late night entry and use of the outside light - ie please turn it off when you go inside.
ACCESS: Guests may make use of the space immediately behind and to the right of the cottage.
WALKING SAFETY: After walking during the summer please check yourselves carefully for ticks. Lyme's Disease is very rare here, but it is always better to exercise caution. Information is available in the cottage.
Please use walking sticks (provided) when walking the mountain. Limestone pavement has grikes that can either fill or just be covered by grass. You need the stick to check that the ground is solid!
