The quiet, tree-lined street is a refuge from the busy, restaurant, theatre and boutique lined thoroughfares just blocks away. The apartment's serene, small space, azulejos, fireplace and pocket garden comfort and renew. Murphy bed (double) welcomes. Wifi and tv available.
You choose whether to eat, sip wine and enjoy coffee at the many neighborhood restaurants, wine bars and coffeehouses or whether you want to cook in the tiny but completely functional kitchen, and then serve in the garden or in the dining room. (Yes, it was the bedroom until you deftly closed the murphy bed!) You can admire the azulejos (Portuguese blue tiles) and the Boulanger tile panel while you cook and dine. Or, settle in by the fireplace and read one of the books you have picked up in the bookstores of the city. Or, pick a concert, play or movie, all in walking distance. The Kimmel is two short blocks away.
The apartment is the first floor of an 1826 brick row house on the Philadelphia Historic Register, and we believe that the fireplace is original. A renovation in the 1940's provided the bathroom and upstairs apartments. The residential street is surprisingly quiet, no doubt due to its narrow car lane, trees, and line of historic houses. The garden borders other gardens and is a leafy home to birds, who love its pyracantha, trumpet vine, dogwood and wisteria. Buddha meditates.
Swedish coffee and tea selections are there for you to make with a drip pot or French press. If you feel like cooking, Whole foods and the Reading Terminal Markets will get you started.
The entire apartment and garden are yours alone during your stay. We will leave a key in a dropbox for your use during your stay. There is no on premises parking.
You will self-check in when you want after 3:00 pm. You will enjoy the privacy of the apartment but if anything comes up don't hesitate to call or text me.
Parking is available at a garage 2 blocks away. Jefferson Station is close by for those coming from the airport or other rail and septa sites. The garage we use is Fine Parking Corp, 316 South 11th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. It is about a 5 minute walk. Street parking is by permit only.
For your use we have a DVD player, travel iron, travel steamer, hair dryer, microwave, oven, small fridge, coffee maker, blender, Cuisinart, WIFI and tv.
Quiet hours after 10:00 PM: The street is entirely residential, and the upstairs and next door neighbors are close. This is very important, as hard-working professionals live above and around the apartment. The front door of the house must remain locked. No smoking in the apartment or garden. 1 well-behaved dog is permitted. (The orientals are old.)
I fell in love with The Canadaway area when I hiked through as a Girl Scout, and I fell in love with Merv in Coimbra, Portugal. Now I am lucky enough to live in with Merv in the cabin we built in the Canadaway Woods behind the Old House and the A-Frame. We have restored the Old House and the A-Frame to host our family and friends during Camp PapaNana, an annual weeklong retreat for grandchildren, neighbors, and extended family. But the houses pine for more company--which is where you come in!
Merv and I love to travel and cook in Europe, and have eaten very well in Portugal, France and Italy. We love antiques and good books and languages.
As our children were growing we hosted many exchange students and we hope that our houses will host many international guests. Merv speaks and reads French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and is working on his Mandarin Chinese. I speak Spanish and Portuguese.
We both were predicted to be foresters by the preference/aptitude tests we took in high school, and after careers in pharmaceutical marketing (me) and ministry/counseling (Merv) we are happy to be living in the Canadaway Woods and managing our forest!
Do come and visit!
