Private detached en-suite accommodation for guests who want a unique, safe and relaxing experience in an area of extreme natural beauty. Positioned up a hillside overlooking a tidal river with fantastic views of the bay. 200m walk to the beach.
The Orchid Garden Lodge is set on a hillside next to the quaint Fishing Village of Armação, between the beaches of Armacao and Matadeiro. The accomodation offers an open plan style, large private double bedroom with an en-suit bathroom. This newly built Lodge combines fresh white walls, with warm white washed wooden floors and a stylish wood burning stove. This is offset by a truly impressive stone wall built using local Matadeiro stone.
There is a double orthopedic mattress, fresh linens, a quilt, pillows and towels are provided. There is a small clothes rail to hang things up and a desk to work at with WIFI internet. Many of the interior decorations were sourced from travels around the world, especially Africa.
The en-suite comprises of a toilet, wash basin and a small roll top bath tub for relaxing. At the rear of the lodge there is a private shower with hot running water. The room is bright, modern and clean with a window looking directly onto native Atlantic forest where you will hear all sorts of bird song.
The lodge front doors open on to a private garden with a stone path which leads down to the communal deck and the hosts private house.
The accommodation offers an ideal place to relax and re-charge your batteries from the stresses and strains of modern life.
The location is perfect for exploring the best of what the south of the island of Florianopolis has to offer.
Access to the Lodge is via a steep staircase which is built in to the Matadeiro hillside, approximately 70 meters upstream from the main footbridge to Matadeiro beach.
(Please note that there is no access by car on this side of the river.) The staircase is not for the faint hearted but at least it is only a short climb of around 20 meters from the bottom until you reach the lodge.
Access is via the veranda of the main house, where you will be greeted by the most fantastic view of the bay of Armacao and the tidal river that separates the beaches of Armacao and Matadeiro.
Just beyond the veranda you will find the deck area with a table and chairs to soak up an even better view. There are a few rock steps leading up to the Garden and the Lodge.
Your 24 year old host Felipe, is a trained Life guard and a very keen experienced hiker and surfer. He is also a Geographer and as such is able to offer a lot of advice and insights in to the geography of the island. He is currently writing his university thesis on Geo-morphology, specifically on Lagoinha Do Leste nature reserve. Please talk to him to arrange private one on one surf lessons or private guided walks.
The location of The Lodge is perfect for exploring the many coastal walks the southern peninsular has to offer, like Lagoinha de Leste, Saquinho, and Naufragados.
Besides this there are trails to the waterfalls of Soidao (Cachoeira da Solidao) and the Lagoa do Peri.
Plus there are various easy trails around the large fresh water lake, (Lagoa do Peri and nature reserve.) You might also like to visit the Municipal Park Visitor Center or the restaurant next door.
There is also a resident tabby cat called Manzanita ( Little Apple) who is often found lounging around sunbathing and generally enjoying herself, like cats tend to do!
However you can easily avoid her as she lives outside, if you are not fond of cats.
Your host speaks fluent Spanish, Portugues and English.
During your stay, we recommended that you take advantage of some of the local activities on offer on Matadeiro and Armacao Beach, such as kayaking, body boarding, Snorkeling, fishing and paragliding. Both beaches are a short walk away (200 meters) from the Lodge.
Lets not forget to mention the little island of Campanhas which is connected to Armacao beach via a raised walkway. You can walk up to the top part of the island, where there are some very interesting rock formations and a huge drop down in to the ocean. This is a wonderful place to watch the sun rise out in the east or look back inland to the south and take in the magnificence of the two bays separated by the River (RIO SANGREDORO) with the mountains in the distance.
Or you can walk down to the lower part where there are some rock pools to paddle and relax beside.
On the armacao beach side, you will find two jetties where the local children spend their summers swimming and diving. In the evenings this is a great place to fish.
One of the jetties on Campanhas island is where the ticket office and boat departs on a daily basis to Campeche Island. There are some archaeological treasures on the island if you fancy taking a guided tour and most of the guides speak English.
Or you can sunbath on the golden sands, eat fresh fish in the restaurant or snorkel in the crystal clear waters.
If you want to visit the Lagoa do Peri Nature Reserve and Park, we recommend that you gently stroll along the seafront promenade to the breathtakingly beautiful Lagoa do Peri Nature Reserve and Lake (20 minutes.) Swimming in the sweet water is divine and then on your way home you can stop for lunch at the famous ONUTRI (Armacao) health food restaurant and Emporium.
If you prefer to relax more at home and you like bird watching you may be able to see many different types of birds including Herons, Woodpeckers, kingfishers and Toucans all from the comfort of the deck or garden.
The house rules are pretty relaxed although there is no smoking in the Lodge. Smoking is allowed on the deck or in the garden.
The neighbors are a musical bunch and can be heard playing live music but if you are looking for a party house, this is NOT it. If your idea of a good time is to listen to some gentle music and enjoy a glass of wine or a beer then you have come to the right place!
