Firstly, if you don't have a 4wd and a really open mind then maybe this isn't the place for you. We were told our 2wd would be fine down this dirt track and it did make it in and out... just. Waratah does own a 4wd but it is a ute with a lift-kit. The place is down a bush track which has plenty of bumps which is manageable but there is a creek crossing. We arrived at night and just ploughed through this creek bouncing around on all the rocks. There were a lot of big bumps on the underside and front of the car getting through and I was relieved it actually got through without flooding the engine. The next day I worked with Waratah and the German kid staying there to rebuild the crossing so there was an obvious line for the car to go across. The accommodation is quite basic. A caravan painted purple with some random ying-yangs and other symbols painted on the inside. We arrived at night and without any electricity were reliant on tea candles which gave the inside of the caravan an unnerving 'you're going to get murdered here tonight' feel to it. Basic is probably overselling it. There is running water out of a tank and a table and bench but nothing else. I woke up in the morning wondering why I was a little itchy and then realised there was a big hole in the roof of the caravan directly above me - or a mosquito murder hole as I like to think of it. We would have left when we arrived but it was too late in the evening and too far from anywhere else to get alternate accommodation. The coup de grace was the toilet. A milk crate allows the eco-warrior to ascend to a wooden platform with a toilet seat built into it under which is... a wheelie bin. "Just chuck some leaves in afterwards" was the advice given. I didn't take her up on that opportunity but chose to go down to her house where she had a regular flushing toilet albeit on an outside veranda. My husband however couldn't pass up the opportunity to "crap into a wheelie bin and not get arrested" as he so eloquently put it. I'm not sure whether when the bin gets full whether you just put it out on collection day? I'm guessing that job falls to the poor German kid. On a more positive note, if you are prepared for just the basics then you might just enjoy the remoteness of the property. There is no fridge or electricity and the shower is a hose stuck to a tree and this can be quite the adventure if you're willing to embrace it. Waratah has an extensive collection of fruit bearing trees both native and from South America which are interesting and at the right time of the year provide an opportunity to try fruits you wouldn't normally get...
This review is a warning to any city people who are afraid of the Australian bush, this probably isn't the place for you. though I believe this is rather an inaccurate reflection on my listing, everyone has their own point of view. please read other reviews for a different point of view. I graciously refunded Grace for the 2 nights she didn't want to stay for and tried to help in any way I could to make her comfortable. Her late arrival, late in the evening didn't help any of us and I'm sure added to her paranoia. The track in here varies at different seasons but I succesfully drive a lite ace van in and out daily, with no special suspension, only a good knowledge of how to drive on dirt tracks. ( i think the ute with the lift kit??? is the 'Blue Bomb', a rusty old suzi I use for working on the farm). I'm sorry Grace that your experience here was not the high light you had hoped.

We were made welcome on arrival and we enjoyed the stay, thank you, Waratah for accommodating our large family. The weather was very wet but the van and living space kept us dry helped by a great fire. The outside shower was awesome and used by some and the toilet was " inavative" my kids loved the poultry and being free to roam around. Thanks for sharing your amazing spot and the tropical fruit was yummy

Great location amidst the rainforest. Gracious host. Thank you Waratah for a wonderful stay and experience. Kids loved it.

Staying with Waratah at her Magic property " whispering winds" was one of the most special trips I have done in many years. Everything is paradise there. A real retreat for the body mind and spirit. Waratah is a real artist in so many ways.... we were blown away by her stunning cooking and knowledge of local plants and farming. The water hole and lake are so beautiful to swim in. I loved her out door shower. And every night I slept so deeply. Best Airbnb experience ever ❤️️
Thank you for your wonderful review, I am so glad you got so much from staying at Whispering Winds.

We loved staying with Waratah. She has created a wonderful sanctuary, and was very keen to show us around and introduce us to the amazing fruit she is growing. The caravan is just as described, a comfortable camping experience. We drove in our rental car (Toyota Camry with very low front bumper) and by driving slowly and carefully had no trouble getting right to the house.

Waratah looked after us very well and was a very sharing type of person. We loved what she has done with her place over the years, too, and enjoyed walking through the bush with her.

Whispering Winds is in bushland 35kms south of Cooktown, near the iconic Black Mountains. Mungumby Creek falls down from the Big Tableland in spectacular cascades, meandering on through the valley it nurtures a beautiful vine rainforest on it's banks, away from the creek the forest opens to open wet sclerophyll woodland, large hard wood trees create shady glades to sit in and special places to dwell.
I often host wwoofers who have helped me create a bio dynamic garden, growing tropical fruit and vegetables, nurtured by the cool spring waters of Mungumby Creek.
I am an artist and a creative, I love exploring new ideas and rehashing old ones, I AM an intuitive who finds nourishment in the natural world, I love exploring the earth, finding it astonishing, amazing and inspirational.

I am surrounded by a wonderland of ecology, rocks, plants, trees, animals, birds, clean water, clear air and rich earth, i am a caretaker for this place that i love and the land nurtures me in return.
I believe it is really important in this speedy time, to spend time connecting with the earth, nature is a meditation, if only we take the time to slow down, breathe deeply, drink in her fragrances and reach out to her, tell her 'Thank you, I love you', listen...and hear her responding.
Whispering Winds is a special place, a safe place where the world stops and nature is waiting for you.
I love welcoming guests and I happily will make you feel at home. If you find your self at Whispering Winds you will have found a 'home from home.'
