When we arrived, we found the key in the lockbox, exactly as described, and we found the studio to be clean and cheerful, with fresh new linens and towels. To our surprise, it was not musty or moldy at all, which is always a concern at a property so close to the ocean.
All the necessities were in place, and we were able to cook up a batch of rice with the very nice supplied rice cooker and have dinner within a short time after our arrival. The small refrigerator was fine for keeping our food (we shop every day or two at the local markets), and the microwave, coffee maker, and barbeque worked well. There are lightweight non-stick pots and pans in the studio, and I even made french toast in a skillet on the barbeque one morning.
The room is cozy but comfortable, with a nice queen-size bed, a ceiling fan, two small chairs, and a nice bathroom. It has a nice flat-screen TV with DirecTV, which we never used. There is also a second detached bathroom that is shared with the main house, which is very handy for showering.
We spent most of our non-sleeping time here on the deck, which is expansive and lovely. There is a table with four chairs, as well as a sink for doing dishes and cleaning up. It looks a bit odd to a mainlander, but it worked quite well - I encouraged the owner to expand it into a small outdoor kitchen, because there is no room inside for any more appliances.
The pool and hot tub were very nice. The pool was a bit brisk while we were there, but we swam and played in it just fine. The pool does not have a very shallow section anywhere except the entrance, so it is NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN who do not swim well.
I can include a couple of caveats. This is a perfect place for one person, two people if you really are accustomed to one another., but there's really no place for anyone more.
Also, the deck, pool, hot tub, and second bathroom are all shared with the other house on the property. If you want privacy and there are people in the house, your only option may be to go into the studio. That said, we thoroughly enjoyed the company of the folks who were staying in the house while we were there, and it worked out perfectly.
There are very few places where you can have the experience of being right on the water, being lulled to sleep by the waves on the rocks just a hundred feet or so away. From the deck we saw whales frolicking in the ocean just offshore, and thoroughly enjoyed all the sights and experiences in Puna. This is a truly unique location and situation that we would recommend to any single person or close couple.
