The London Suite @ Dwell Suites

I was truly disappointed with my stay at the Dwell Suites. The listing was misleading and promised amenities that the house did not provide. The living room, although it looks welcoming in photos, when I arrived was covered in clothes that remained for two weeks until the clothes and all the furniture in the living room and kitchen were removed. The hosts told me that they were simply doing some redecorating, but they moved out of the house and no redecorating took place. For the last three weeks of my stay at the Dwell Suites, there was no furniture in the kitchen or the living room. Similarly, the bar sitting area pictured is also not as advertised. It does not actually exist. It is the landing area between the four rooms on the second floor but no seating area is set up. Although the listing includes photos of the kitchen, it is not an amenity that guests can use. I did ask the hosts if I could use the kitchen before I arrived to make my breakfast and lunch, and was told that I could. Upon arriving, however, I realized that the kitchen was very much for the family and I felt like I would have been intruding in their space if I used it. In regards to communication with the hosts, I asked if I could leave early and was told that “here in America we have things called leases”, which I found rather offensive and rude. My later follow-ups with the hosts to further discuss the possibility of leaving early went unanswered. In the end, I filed a complaint with Airbnb regarding the issues. They were very helpful due to the strong misrepresentation in the listing. If the listing solely focused on the London Suite, rather than the whole house, I think the experience would have been better. Although the room I stayed in served as my bedroom/living room/ kitchen, the bed was comfortable and each week the housekeeper cleaned the room. I should point out, however, that four people shared the bathroom, which was not ideal. It was cleaned daily M-F, but as the guests cannot use the kitchen to wash their dishes, the sink is starting to smell like rotting food. In all, I do not recommend staying at the Dwell Suites. In addition to the aforementioned issues, the area is not safe for walking at night. A couple of mornings I woke up to homeless people rummaging through the trash outside, which did not bother me, but I think future guests should be aware of that. The London Suite also gets quite hot during the day from the sun and there is no air conditioning.
To answer the questions posed by Airbnb.. Did the host make you feel welcome? -Unfortunately no. The maid let me in and the hosts never greeted me or showed me around. Was the listing description accurate? -Importantly, kitchen and laundry access is extremely restricted. In my opinion I don't think it's fair to list kitchen or free off-street parking as an amenity at all. Laundry and kitchen are only allowed 3 days a week, and are shared by 5 guests and 3 members of the host family. There is no room in the kitchen to store or prepare food. The kitchen is fully occupied by the host family, and unfortunately the surfaces were taken up by things like dirty dishes, uneaten food, etc. I never used the kitchen once as there was truly no room (or invitation) to do so. I was not offered off-street parking and they ignored my request for it. In addition, I think the listing paints an exaggerated picture of the room (which is just a room and not a "suite". Note also that every one of their ads says "one of our larger suites"). For example, it lists TV with built in PC which it doesn't provide. Not that most people want that, but why say it has something it doesn't? Same goes for the continental breakfast and wine mentioned in the profile- that is not that the vibe at all. The hosts are more landlord than host. I think it's also important to note a few things the ad doesn't mention- surveillance cameras inside the house, a young child (he's adorable but would be nice to have notice you'll be living with a child), and a toilet system that does not work. (Sharing the bathroom with 4-5 other guests, that got very very messy....... the toilet was constantly clogging and you can imagine what that entailed...). Other incidents while I was there included the shower being broken for about a week, my bed frame falling apart (though they were nice about fixing that), and the water being turned off for at least an entire evening with no notification. What's the neighborhood like? -On one side, low-rent city feel while the other side is better and more residential. It is not at all my intention to write a mean-spirited review. This is not personal to the hosts, who I'm sure are fine people that have pleased many other guests as the reviews show, but simply information I would want to know as a potential guest. When people rent at Airbnb they spend significant money and a bad housing choice can really affect your overall comfort and happiness as you travel. This house would prbly be fine in the short term, but I was there for about 2 months and cannot recommend it for a long-term stay. A couple days would have been fine. A positive about the house was that the bed was comfortable.
Dennis and Dorben were extremely welcoming and gracious, from helping me out when I lost my keys to inviting me to meals with them to even driving me to my bus stop once when it was raining. Their hospitality was boundless, the room was clean and comfortable, and the house was nearly always quiet. I would definitely recommend the room to others.
