You will fall in love with this spacious and sunny Ohana just minutes from snorkeling and South Kona beaches. Lovingly restored, this cottage features a 180 degree view surrounded by lush tropical flowers and looking out on an unforgettable sunset view.
We promise you will love this amazing bedroom with its picture windows looking out on lush tropical flowers and trees--it feels like you are in your own private Swiss Family Robinson but without sacrificing on amenities. The windows look out on acres of tropical flowers and fruits like mangos, papayas and plumeria.
The bedroom has a queen bed and separate sitting room that is perfect for curling up and reading about the fascinating history of this ancient part of the Big Island and its historic settlement by Captain Cook. In the distance is Kealakekua Bay, site of James Cook's first encounter with the people of Hawaii and later the place where he met his end. It is said that the bay is protected by the spirits of the alii, or chiefs, that led this proud nation prior to the arrival of the missionaries after Cook's discovery.
The bath in this cottage was practically built for royalty--it features a large jetted tub -and marble surround as well as a separate shower and dressing area. The tub peeks into the bedroom and out onto the property through two windows that allow for tons of natural light and a great cross-breeze on tradewind evenings.
The kitchenette is outfitted with a refrigerator, convection oven, two-burner hot plate, toaster, coffee maker, blender and microwave as well as a bar for two. The living room has a pullout couch that can provide additional sleeping space as well as a flat panel TV. The entire property features free wifi and additional services such as a dvd player are available upon request.
We are a quick five minute drive from the famed "two-step" for the best snorkeling the island has to offer. If you get down there bright and early you may be lucky enough to swim with the pod of dolphins that call these amazing beaches their home. Beach chairs and towels are available with the cottage.
The owners are onsite and we are always happy to help you plan or make recommendations so that you can make the most of your stay on the island. We offer free farm tours and provide a seasonal basket of our farm-fresh produce to help make your stay unique and special. We would be honored to have you as our guests and do everything we can to help make your trip to Hawaii the trip of a lifetime!
The cottage overlooks the Macadamia Nut Orchard and guests are free to enjoy the spacious grounds. There is a private outdoor eating area with a gas grill and convenient parking. The shared washer and dryer is located near the shop space.
While we live onsite we do prefer to give you your space and privacy to enjoy your vacation getaway. We are always happy to answer questions and give you a tour of the farm (with advance notification).
The Sunset Cottage is a private cottage but it is an Ohana, which is a Hawaiian cottage attached to another house. The two are separated by a breezeway and the cottage has its own parking and private entrance.
Recent update-we are currently experiencing a drought that, while it has minimized the threat of dengue fever, has the farm looking a little sunburnt. Thankfully it has only killed grasses and some more fragile plants and the grounds still have plenty of lush areas to enjoy. We are pleased to report that there are no existing cases of dengue and haven't had any in more than six weeks.
Quiet hours are 10pm-8am daily. We encourage you to make yourselves at home! Please bring your own laundry detergent for the onsite washer and dryer. We provide dish soap for the kitchen as well as an earth-friendly cleaner for light cleaning during your stay. You are not required to remove linens or clean upon departure, however, we do ask that you simply wash any dirty dishes so that we can put them away when we come in to clean.
We are very flexible with special requests and encourage you to ask if you have any questions or need anything that is not provided for you.
My name is Mandi, and I am a part of the team that lives and works here at Lani Kai Farm and Gardens. Together with my husband, Chad, and my parents, Randy and Ruth. we started Lani Kai Gardens in an effort to simplify our lives, combining our talents and time to living closer to the land and enjoying and caring for this amazing piece of paradise.
When we found this property in 2010 we could see its beauty and potential but it needed help. The farm had not been worked in many years and the cottages had not been updated in some time. We have since cleaned up the orchards, returned the farm to a good working order and begun working toward adding to and diversifying our crop selection. We have also thoroughly renovated and updated three cottages which we now rent as vacation rentals.
Through all of our renovations both in the cottages and on the farm we have focused on using renewable, sustainable materials whenever possible. In 2012 we were fortunate to be able to add a very large solar installation that has enabled us to generate more than 70% of the electricity we use and are working on plans to supplement with small scale solar hot water projects.
Our location offers us and our guests a more authentic stay on a beautiful island rich with history and culture. We offer a lush tropical setting that is quiet and peaceful, encouraging a deeper connection to your surroundings and the ability to truly connect with the land. Our property overlooks Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Site and Kealakekua Bay--close to "Two-Step" and the Captain Cook Monument and the best snorkeling on the island. We have two gray sand beaches close by, one with a quiet cove and keiki pond perfect for little ones. We can see the whales in the winter and spring and have spinner dolphins in the bay that come to visit the snorkelers in the early morning hours.
We are also closer to Volcanoes National Park, Black Sand Beach at Punalu'u and Green Sand Beach. some of the "must-see" sites for visitors.
We are always here to help in planning and to answer any questions you may have. We were once travelers here ourselves and are ready to help you make the most of your Hawaiian getaway!
