Joanne is a very nice, warm and welcoming lady. She came to the train station (Amtrak) to receive me after her work, and she helped me with the luggage too. We had a few dinners together in her home and many many long chats about various things. Joanne's place is bit far away from downtown, but then I must say, the price is very reasonable and justified. One bus can take you directly to downtown within 30 minutes and with a change you can reach the universities within approx. an hour. The place is not very clean, mainly because there is a cat in the home. And there are very limited option for entertainment. Having no TV was not a problem for me, but the internet was bad. You need to reconnect it once every hour. My overall experience was good. I would recommend this place for people who is looking for cheap accommodations or a last-minute place.
Joanne was a great host - perfect for an affordable pit stop in Pittsburgh. Don't expect too much in the way amenities, the listing is essentially an invitation to crash in the living room of the hosts' apartment, with no TV and bare minimum of Internet service. The pullout sofa is very bare bones, and if you are a delicate sleeper I also wouldn't suggest the listing. This isn't the place to go if you are looking for an aesthetic travel experience, it is for the budget conscious only. I did not attempt to navigate the bus system, and this listing is a little far out from downtown, but there is parking, driving in downtown isn't too difficult, and parking down there isn't SUPER expensive, although it's not cheap either. Joanne is very nice and knowledgeable about the area. If you need little other than a place to crash and an accommodating ghost, and can deal with sleeping on a bare-bones fold out sofa, then this provides the most affordable way to stay in the area.
Thanks, James, for the review, you are right, it a bare bones "minimalist" apartment and I try to warn people about the couch. It is not for someone who does not like sleeping on the floor. The bare bones amenities prevent distraction for anything but sleep. I will look into upgrading later. You were a wonderful guest!
