We enjoyed our stay in Nicolosi at Esmeralda's place. The apartment is located over a street with a few shops and restaurants, near the Cathedrale. It is private and secure, accessed from the sidewalk through a set of locked, metal doors. Passing through them, you walk down a ramp to an inner courtyard, and into the building from there.
Our apartment was on the first floor, first above street level. To gain access, we proceeded down the ramp, then up two short flights of stairs to the door of the building, then up two flights of stairs inside the building. The apartment consisted of hallway, with bathroom at the far end. Immediately inside, to the left is the kitchen, to the right the sitting area with a small table which could be used for dining. Continuing down the hallway, to the right is the bedroom, with bed, nightstands, armoire and two chairs.
The kitchen is built around an island, with small refrigerator (bar size, I'd say, under the side of the island,) 4 burner gas cooktop, drawer storage and sink. There was a complete array of utensils and cooking items available, along with a few food items to help us along (thanks!) The window side of the island has bar seating. There are two window / doors in the kitchen leading out to a patio, which is shared with another apartment, and which has a rectangular table and chairs, for relaxation or dining. A small greenhouse-like closet houses the recycling, rubbish, drying rack for the clothes, etc.
The photographs on the listing are very good and fully represent the property. The bathroom is great, with a walk-in shower, and the clothes washing machine is tucked under the counter of the sink. If you wash clothes, don't be gentle with the door of the washer - if it is not firmly latched, the machine will not start.
There is free parking available on two side streets, without the need to move the car.
The Gateway to Etna is next to the Church, so the apartment is nearly ideally situated for exploring the mountain. Tour companies are based on the green / piazza in front of the Church.
As for food shopping, there is a Deco store 8 minutes away, walking (showed up on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps as a Carefour, but it is a Deco.)
We would definitely stay here again. Thanks!
