When my GF and I found Apartment 6, we fell in love! I immediately contacted the host and he responded rapidly (less than 24 hours). Our "honeymoon" to NYC was booked! What I really loved was the fast & friendly communications. A week before our trip, our host contacted us again to make sure everything was OK and we confirmed at what time we planned on arriving.
Leaving from Montreal, we drove through a snow & ice storm (yikes!) and arrived safely in the afternoon. Our host greeted us and we spoke for about an hour about the city, the house rules, the good restaurants in the neighbourhood, this was awesome and very friendly!
The apartment was better than we expected. First, when we took the elevator, we didn't realize it would drop us off directly in the apartment! Yes, this is a penthouse apartment. We had the master bedroom (the owner was away) which includes a private bathroom. This was much better than any hotel we had looked at. Very richly decorated, we fell in love again with the apartment.
NYC is a loud city, right? We didn't hear a thing at night. Plus, in the morning, we had a terrific view on St-John the Divine Cathedral across from Morningside Park. Even though we were 2 streets from Central Park (Upper West Side), we were a bit uncomfortable about living in Harlem... Our host explained that this part of Harlem (South-West) was very gentrified, that abandoned houses had been converted into condos, etc. Frederick Douglas Boulevard was a great street to live on, with its many restaurants. We ate in a Senegalese bakery and a soul food restaurant, both were good and affordable.
Another great thing about the apartment: it's between two subway stations so we didn't use the car at all. In fact, we were able to park on Amsterdam Avenue for 5 days in a row without having to move it... for free. Free parking in NYC? You bet!
Needless to say, I give an A+ rating to this apartment. The host, the apartment and the neighbourhood are great!
