If you have a chance to stay in this home, then grab it! It will be a highlight of your year. I can imagine it being a perfect setting for a short sabbatical, a writing or planning retreat, or a home base to recharge between adventures during a family vacation in the San Francisco Area. Depending upon your destination, you can choose between a direct route to the highways or parking at a nearby BART station to get to urban sights. My family and I had the great luck to stay here for a month while waiting to move back into our home after 4 years away. On first sight, my son called it “the castle.” Set in the hills of Berkeley, you will have a panoramic view of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. In one bedroom, you can fall asleep looking at the lights around the Bay and wake up watching the sun rise or the fog crawl in through the Gate. When you look up from your morning paper, you may see deer in the front garden or hear turkeys call. In the neighboring private park, children will find trees to climb, rock outcroppings to serve as a fort, and a tire swing. Meanwhile adults will appreciate lounging in an Adirondack chair or playing a game of tennis. Everyone will enjoy the pool. When you want to stretch your legs, I recommend exploring the walks through the hill neighborhoods to pocket parks where you will find folks practicing their rock climbing skills and you can pick wild blackberries. You might catch a performance at a nearby amphitheater in the woods. Amy and Yann made us feel completely welcome and checked in during our stay to make sure we were content. The “castle” is a perfect combination of a lovely vacation home and summer camp retreat.
