We - a family of five - have spent two fantastic weeks at Ivones and Carolinas Azenha and are really looking back. Everything was just perfect! The house, the location, the pool and the attention to detail with the furnishings - inside and outside - the former water mill make it an indescribably beautiful place. Ivone has welcomed us very warmly - Carolina was on vacation - and was always available for questions and assistance we need, has nice tips and she often just wanted to know if we are doing well and feel comfortable. A question that never comes at this special place, because it is truly exceptional. The children loved the pool, the river, the forest, we parents often could not choose between sun loungers, lounge couch or hammock, but the most beautiful place in the morning is the window-sill on the ground floor. You sit - no, you are perched - with a coffee over the river, hear it rushing and look slowly the sun rise - couldn't imagine a better place! If you want to leave this exceptional place you find everything you need for perfect holidays e.g. nice beaches, smart (historic) towns, good restaurants and supermarkets in a short distance by car. Thank you Ivone an Caroline from all of us for having us! We will definitely come again!
This is a very special place, especially if you want peace and quiet. The house is entirely separate and looks exactly like the pictures. We enjoyed the days in the house, the covered terrace and the pool were the big hits. There are good opportunities for hiking and running in the area as well as good excursions to exciting cities, which Ivone also gave good informations about. The village has a good grocery store and the food at the restaurant Tappas and Caffe is absolutely delicious.
We are a family of 6 - 2 adults and 4 teenage children. We tend to go to places a little off the beaten track where we can stay away from the tourist hordes and enjoy quiet time together. Azena fit the bill completely and lived up to all expectations :-) The house is an old converted mill right on a river and is completely surrounded by nature and the beautiful sound of a river flowing by. The house itself, while old, is done up really nicely with homely, personal touches. To wake up in the morning, draw the landing shutters and look right out on the river was a real pleasure. While secluded (you can't see another dwelling if you turn 360 degrees in almost any part of the property), it is still only a short bike ride (bikes included in the property!) to the local supermarket for fresh bread and excellent wine and local coffee shops and cafes. On arrival, Ivone had some fresh Nata's, local cheese and wine left for us which was a nice touch and much appreciated. Her partner escorted us up to the local village to direct us to the shops and amenities. The place was spotless and Ivone had a cleaner come in half way thru our 2 weeks to re-clean. The pool is lovely with plenty of shaded areas all over the place when it gets too hot. Our kids spent days just lying in the hammocks reading and swimming in the pool. Ivone also arranged a wonderful Kayak trip on the river with Rui, who not only guides you for a couple of hours down a beautiful river, but also tells you about local customs and history - We are Celts too after all! This is well worth doing and is thoroughly enjoyable and informative. So, when you tire of the busy beaches and packed touristy cities (which are all within a relatively short 40 minute drive btw) you can come home to relax in Azena where all the worries of the world will just melt away... Unbedingt empfehlenswert. Danke, Ivone!
Dear Martina, You and your family were great guest! allways with a smile and an excellent attitude! we will be glad to have you again in the near future. Thank you! As I told you, I will translate your comment, hopping to respect your main ideas :) Fantastic - a little paradise! The old watermill is comfortable and tastefully decorated. Here you can rest, reading a book on the beautiful terrace with a glass of wine or swimming in the pool. We were 4 women (52 - 82 years old) and enjoyed it from the first to the last day! After a short time we had become accustomed to the wild-romantic sound of the river. We did not get used to crossing the very narrow Celtic bridge in front of the house. No problem! So we always left our car in front of the bridge and walked over to the house. Ivone is a very good hostess and welcomed us warmly. In the fridge waited a bottle of wine and a few little things to eat for the first night. In the village of Fragoso, 1 km away, we spent the evenings in a small cafe, mainly frequented by locals. The very nice owner cooked every day only 1 dish - but excellent, including the typical Bacalhau. In Fragoso we were able to buy some food in a small supermarket, and if you want a big supermarket you will have for example the continent in Esposende. To go to the beach or to visit some pretty cities around it is not far, but you definitely need a car. We had a wonderful week and felt very comfortable in Ivone's small paradise. Absolutely recommendable. Thanks, Ivone!
We had an amazing stay at the house! It is located in the forest and we never had stayed at a place so secluded and quiet but yet you have all the amenities in the house, like the pool, a big yard to play, nice areas to rest, hammocks, a BBQ. It is spacious and very clean and has comfortable beds! In the rare case we set a foot outside of the estate we did a canoeing trip with Rui that Ivone organized for us. It was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation and I can recommend everyone to take the chance and do it! During the summer the river has little water so we did it with kids and it was really safe, in the winter it must be more like rafting. We also visited the cities in the area like Porto, Braga, Viana de Castello. They are all vibrant and full of history, so don't worry if there might be some rainy days. Yvone was a wonderful host, reacted very quickly to all our questions and made suggestions where to go! One of the best vacations ever!! :)
Ivone (Carolina was away when we stayed) was a fantastic host. Prior to the holiday our queries were answered very promptly and she was really helpful - as proved to be the case throughout the rest of our stay. On arrival in the area she came to meet us in the local village to guide us to the accommodation which was definitely needed as we'd have struggled to find it otherwise! She showed us around the property (which was exactly as shown in the photos) and kept in touch throughout our stay to check that all was well - it would be hard to say how she could have improved upon how welcome she made us feel. The mill was an oasis in a beautiful spot next to the running river, the noise of which provided the background soundtrack to our stay. It also gave the opportunity to use the kayak that was provided - we had a really fun afternoon on the river. The house provides a lovely place to stay with everything that a family could need for a relaxing holiday - the challenge is tearing yourself away to go and visit some of the historic sights that are only a short distance away.
