This is a magical house. For us, it felt like we found our second home and we thank Maria so much for her hospitality. We had just completed a very trying (understatement) 12 months of hell and were completely burnt out. This home was just what the doctor ordered! We slept in the third floor bedroom with the doors open and the rooftops of the old city stretched out before us. The second floor open plan dining/kitchen/sitting area was a haven for us to rest, eat, write and enjoy the neighborhood around us. Ted loved the roof and often wrote up there, even at night. Claire loved the little balconies on the second and third floor. We both loved Maria's home style - vintage/found/heirloom/welcoming/casual and comfortable - it was like being in our own apartment in NY. The bed was great!!! We also LOVED the location - steps away from perfect bread, an amazing local chicken place (Frango du Cidudad - not sure of the spelling but you can't miss it!). The tapas place right on the corner blew our minds! and also right down the street was a lovely gift shop run by a local older woman . A relief from the usual hard sell of the souvenir guys on the beach street - she had beautiful things not found other places and we loved visiting with her. Also of great delight was the new organic gelato place on the square down the street - we ate gelato every night just because we had to check out all the flavors - SO GOOD!!! We had a car (the streets are NARROW so pick a small car) and our friends lived in the area so we got to visit the coast and enjoy the beach at Fuseta. The water was a bit too cold for us but the beach and the wind were lovely. Truly a spectacular area to explore. Maria had beach towels and an umbrella - much appreciated and needed! All of these things overshadowed the couple of challenges presented by Maria's beautiful home. That means it was so great that the minor things didn't impede on our stay - When you stay in a home that is almost 200 years old you will face its unique challenges. We know - our NY apartment is 104 years old and we are used to its crankiness. With that said - at Maria's the stair are steep. so you should be mobile enough to go up and down - Claire hates stairs and didn't find it an issue AT ALL - Ted said it was a bit more than expected. So keep that in mind. The plumbing is fragile and Maria had to institute a "no flushing of toilet paper" rule because of serious damage. We - as former campers - easily worked something out. It didn't impede on our stay AT ALL but if you are not comfortable with that, this is not the house for you. Lastly, the...

Maria's place is absolutely wonderful--spacious, clean, well-stocked, and beautiful. The roof terrace is a great place to start the morning or watch the sunset. Maria is a wonderful host; we would definitely stay again.

We had an amazing week in Maria's house. It is perfectly located in Olhao, it is in the old town (and the nice part of the old town), restaurants, super markets, ferry to the islands, everything in walking distance. Parking was also easy. The house itself is perfectly equipped and really nice decorated and the amazing rooftop was our dining and living room enjoying sunrise and sunset! Maria is a great host, she gave us a very warm welcome at the day of our arrival, had many great tips for us and was very responsive. We would definitely come back and can highly recommend Maria's place!

Maria warmly welcomed us with wine, bread, fruit and cheese and gave us a tour of her home and the history of Olhão. My sister, friend and I had the best time at her beautiful home and it was much better than we expected. Would highly recommend staying in her place.

This home is wonderful. From the moment you walk in the doors you feel at home. The place kinda feels like a high end hotel, the furniture is quality and the light fixtures are elegant. The beds are both very comfortable and the layout of the place is nice as it's staggered on 4 levels- which provides good variety. We did have a slight issue with the power going out... however it was easily fixed by flicking the breaker. However, if you have the lights on the main floor on, plus are cooking you need to prioritize as the power will go off if too many things are on. This kinda got annoying while cooking as I couldn't have the lights on and charge my iPhone at the same time. The rooftop patio is great! However no lights at nighttime, so bring candles or buy some at the local store before coming if you want a lit rooftop at nighttime. The location of the home couldn't be better, walking distance to the fish market, and all the good restaurants and shops.

Nice central house. But the whole city smells of sewage

A wonderful time. We had a great time.
