Comfortable guest suite in great DC "hidden gem" neighborhood with easy access to all of DC. Sleep well in a comfortable memory foam queen bed. Attached movie room where after a long day you can put your feet up & relax with Netflix, etc. We also have a lovely front porch and back terrace with a fire table for guests .
Warmly decorated home with art and textiles from lots of travels. The main sleeping room has a queen sized bed with a memory foam mattress. In the TV room we have an oversized sofa that is a great place to curl up and watch movies although this sofa is not to be used as an extra bed. The room is comfy but not insulated so it is just a spare lounging area. Given that our home is not set up to be little-kid friendly (breakables, art, older cat not a fan of being chased, yanked on, etc.), we LOVE kids but would prefer to only host children 7-8 years old or older.
Bike share bike station nearby with comfortable city bikes available to rent ($8 per day) and convenient stations all throughout the city. Bike shops also not too far to rent bikes as well. Great way to see the city!
We enjoy helping guests with local recommendations, directions, etc. We value meeting people from all over and happy to interact as desired or needed by the guests. We've shared drinks, meals and activities at times but only when guests want this and if our schedules permit it.
Some idiosyncrasies in our home...Our cat Camillo lives here and he will likely come around for affection if he isn't outside doing his favorite activity---lounging and sleeping. He may also ask you to turn the water on a slow drip so he can drink from the faucet or tub.
Your bedroom door does close firmly but it is an old home so you need to just lean against it gently or give it a small hip lean-in until the latch catches.
We have one full bathroom next to your room and a WC (toilet and sink) off the dining room. We do share the shower but guests often feel like it is their private bathroom as they get first priority and have not found this a problem as we just shower when guests or out and use the downstairs restroom as needed.
Help yourself to any cooking spices, condiments, coffee or tea you want and we'll make space for you in the refrigerator if you want to buy breakfast or other food items to cook at home. We have a juice press too if you want to buy citrus and pomegranates to easily press lovely fresh juice. There are farmer's markets in the square in Mt. Pleasant, Columbia Heights and in DuPont Circle on Saturday morning until about 1pm as well as local grocery stores on Mt. Pleasant St. We go to the small bodega by the Thai restaurant but there are a few others. There is also a very large Giant in Columbia Heights.
Although we have a butcher block in the kitchen, in order to keep it nice, we cut on a cutting board only and clean it with a damp cloth or sponge. We kindly ask you do the same. We do not put any chemical sprays on this and regularly treat this with a special oil safe for food preparation.
Our home is a great place for us to 'staycation' so we hope you enjoy your stay and feel you have a home in the city!
Children over 8 may be okay but please ask first--We love kids but our home is not really set up for them. Please be respectful of the neighbors and keep noise down especially after 11 pm. Only one car in the parking space in the back and please make sure it is not sticking out in the ally or you may get ticketed. Smoking is permitted outside on our terrace. No pets. No overnight guests except those included in the reservation.
Easy going professional couple and globe trotters/travelers--I travel both on my own for work and with my husband Victor for fun---Recently moved to Washington, DC from Switzerland and have family on 5 continents. We host people and enjoy hospitality programs aimed at experiencing a place like a local and cultural exchange. We prefer this type of travel usually to sterile hotels. These I get plenty of with business travel.
I like world music, find cultures fascinating and like live music, museums, independent films and most things that involve enjoying the outdoors when weather permits. Victor and I both like exploring new places without a rigid itinerary and can make our own fun just about anywhere...especially if we can experience places a bit like locals.
I am very respectful and tidy and have been told that I leave places cleaner than when I arrived. Coming from a very mixed cultural background myself, I tend to enjoy myself and grow wherever I am planted as does my laid back and friendly husband.
Note--We can speak and understand the languages listed in varying abilities so not all fluently. English and Spanish are our mother tongues respectively and we can get by in German. Victor has a decent command of Italian and I can get by in French so if you'd rather respond to us in any of these languages, we could understand you but may have to write you back in English.
