Our neighborhood attracts a mixture of families with children, seniors, and longtime residents, and the atmosphere is relaxed and congenial, with people who a friendly yet respect everyone's privacy. Days flow by in a regular rhythm as the kids swarm by on their bikes at 9 am headed to Boys' and Girls' Club day camp, then crowds amble over to the 10:45 am morning lecture by internationally famous speakers, e.g. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Chautauqua Lake calls for an afternoon of swimming and/or sailing, and the 8:15 pm evening program fills the historic Amphitheater with music from classical, to jazz, to rock.
You have everything you need to whip up gourmet meals in our sparkling new clean and well-equipped kitchen, but there are also restaurants from casual to fine dining within a few blocks, and a variety of lakeside dining places to reach by car. My wife and I are retired professors teaching part-time. We're musicians (clarinet, violin) interested in the arts, especially classical music. We have just finished a fascinating, unforgettable year in Japan as visiting professors. We love sharing our Chautauqua vacation home with others, because the Chautauqua Institution is a unique opportunity for recreation, education, relaxation and life-long learning. There's no place like it!
All four seasons in Chautauqua are amazing. The many people who come for the 9 week summer program season enjoy a pleasantly cool retreat lakeside. In the autumn the crisp, bright air and the fall colors are a sight to behold. Winter in Chautauqua brings out the toboggan, cross-country skis, downhill skiing at Peek 'n' Peak and Holiday Valley, horse-drawn sleigh rides around the grounds, and a glass of spiced wine by the fire. Yumm. After the deep snows, when spring comes, the Plaza is ablaze with tulips, and the "snow birds" gradually return, energizing the whole cycle again.
We like to cook, and there are many farm stands and markets nearby to source local Chautauqua County produce from. Since our year in Japan, we've been know to produce a 7-course Japanese gourmet dinner on occasion--a lot of work, but worth it.
As avid readers, we can usually be found with Meg's nose in a detective story, especially one with a woman detective, and Lyle might have a history, biography, or modern American volume open. He likes to keep up with his German by reading, too.
We've had some amazing experiences with people around the world and made friends in many corners of the globe. Many of our guests return year after year, and we consider them treasured friends, too. At our place, everyone should be able to just unpack and have a great vacation, but everything they need is right at hand That's our goal.
