DE WITTE RAAF – meaning White Raven in Dutch, is a colonial-style villa situated in a traditional Sri Lankan village, 10 minutes drive from some of the most spectacular beaches in the world. It sleeps 6-8 in simple, open-plan accommodation with open loft-style sleeping areas, two bathrooms, one of which has its own walled garden. It enjoys a fully-equipped kitchen for self-catering, a garden pavilion housing a dining area and open-style seating. The mature tropical garden with indigenous trees and flowering plants, provides cool shade and attracts a variety of tropical birds. There is also a splash pool in the garden along with a lily pond and outdoor seating. Our Villa Manager, Lal, who together with his wife Prem, stay in a separate house on the premises will make your stay as comfortable as possible. On request they can prepare some traditional Sri Lankan dishes.
De Witte Raaf is ideal for an extended family, friends or couples. It is not suitable for toddlers. Children 5 and above are welcome but should be supervised by the pool and loft stairs. It is ideal for nature-lovers, artists, writers, bird watchers, mountain bikers, anyone looking for a unique retreat. The fishing town of Weligama with its fresh vegetable and fish markets and beach-side restaurants is 5 minutes drive. The historical walled city of Galle, with all its cafes, restaurants, boutique shops and fine-dining is only a 30 minute drive away. Mirissa, 15 minutes from the house, boasts one of the best surfing beaches in the country and is a great place for spending a day or taking a boat for seasonal whale watching, scuba diving and other water sports.
AIR CONDITIONING -There is none. However, each room has ceiling fans and the roof has been raised to assure a cool evening breeze from the ocean.
MOSQUITO NETS - Each bed has one. Mosquitoes are not a particular problem, however you are advised to take sensible precautions and bring repellent, like any other place in Sri Lanka
HOT WATER - Hot water is available though the water pressure is variable, depending on the time of the year, and the position of the stars..
MOD CONS The bathroom has all modern conveniences, including a flush lavatory, a small jungle, a shower under the stars and a resident sunbird (if you are lucky).
GARDEN The garden doesn’t have manicured lawns, it has a half-acre mess of a jungle with monkeys in the trees but it does have bananas and breadfruit for the table and the occasional pineapple on a good day!
WILD LIFE - I have 2 dogs. If you don’t like dogs then this place is not for you. They are my friends and family. As long as they get an occasional tummy scratch they won’t bother you and they don't come in the house. There are other friends too like the occasional monitor lizard, a lost porcupine or even (once) a peacock; lots of geckos a few ugly toads and frogs, a million crazy tropical fish, but nothing nasty.
BIRDS – To name just a few I’ve spotted: red woodpecker, green woodpecker, kingfishers of all types golden and black-headed oriels, and the occasional Indian roller or paradise flycatcher….twitchers welcome!!!
SPLASH POOL – You can swim laps if you swim diagonally (one friend proved this possible). Basically a splash pool but with a 6ft deep end..so great for a cool off (or for trimming those thighs!)
YOGA - There is plenty of private space to lay down your yoga mat or for some quiet meditation.
Galle Historical Walled Town, Mirissa Surfing Beach, Weligama Fish and Veg Market, Matara, Dondra Head, Unawatuna. Fantastic biking trails from the doorstep.. contact: (URL HIDDEN) for moutainbike hire. Enjoy horse riding at the Ceylon Riding Club (half-day trip) with special discounted rates for guests.
Since the house is located in a village, nudity or raucous behaviour is inappropriate. We rely on our good relations with the local community and we expect our guests to respect this. Whilst children of all ages are welcome special supervision is needed for children between 2-12 due to the deep pool, steep stairs and unprotected loft areas.
