Utila's only Treehouse was hand-crafted by Norwegian carpenter and artist John Arne Løken, to fulfill his dream of a harmonious and resplendent home in the vibrant nature of the tropical Bay Islands. There is no other place like it, on the island, in the world. Romantic, unique, and naturally beautiful.
The house boasts two floors aloft in a giant fig tree. First floor studio contains a full kitchen (oven, fridge, blender, coffee maker, pots, pans, all necessary dishes and silverware, etc.) and dining/living area plus queen bed surrounded by windows facing the eastern shore and sunrise.
The second floor is a full queen bedroom with skylight and stunning views through the glass-paned, easterly facing wall. Both floors have air-conditioners and fans, as well as custom-crafted louvered windows to catch the rich tropical breezes that only a house high in a tree can arrange.
There are three decks, meticulously designed around the fig tree to provide varying degrees of cool, leafy shade, each with its own generous view of rich green vegetation, perfectly set off by blue ocean and sky. From the top deck you can almost touch the whirling gulls, or Milky Way, depending on the time of day. Requisite hammocks provided, of course.
Complete bathroom with hot-water shower is located on the ground level, as well as a refreshing, private outdoor bucket shower on the first elevated deck.
The treehouse is the best of both worlds: extremely private (nestled in the nature of Stuart's Hill, hidden from view and away from the noise and bustle of town) and yet just a few minutes' walk to the commercial center.
The house is situated on the side of Stuart's Hill, and a two-minute walk to the top rewards with its 360-degree view of the island. Just outside of the property lies Utila's Iguana Station, a research center and tourist attraction where you can learn about Utila's endangered endemic iguanas along with myriad other creatures who also call the island home.
Our property managers will meet you upon arrival at your point of entry and take you to the house for a tour.
The treehouse requires mild agility and periodic tree-hugging. There are stairs and some slight maneuvering is required in the giant fig. There can be other tree inhabitants, such as tarantulas, but they are normally only found outside in the tree or on the ground level. We ask our guest to share the tree peacefully with the other creatures that live in nature, or call the property managers should there be an issue, rather than killing them.
Garbage can be taken out to one of the public garbage bins on the main road any day of the week.
John Arne built the treehouse as his dream home. We hope guests will enjoy the artistry and in turn take care of our special tropical getaway.
There is a power allowance of 20 KWH per day. This is very generous and most guests never approach the total allowance, but if you do exceed it the balance will be deducted from your damage deposit.
There is absolutely no smoking and no pets allowed in the house. All smoking must be done on the ground floor patio, not on any of the tree decks. We ask you please be very careful when putting out cigarettes because the leaves and ground can be dry certain times of year. Evidence of smoking in the house or improper disposal of cigarettes will result in a $200 deduction from the damage deposit.
The treehouse was built as a place to decompress and enjoy nature. While we understand tenants may like to have new friends over for dinner or to enjoy the view, we do not allow large gatherings or late-night parties. It is dangerous for people to drink excessively high up in the tree and we are not comfortable with the risk, so we do not permit parties. Should this term be violated the entire damage deposit will be kept.
Rates include a one-time linen-towel setup and cleaning prior to arrival. Longer stays, (more than a week) can get weekly linen service and cleaning if desired at an additional charge. Wireless internet plus a cell phone are included and pre-paid. Transport at arrival is included.
The maximum number of guests is limited to four (4) persons. Your reservation specifies how many guests are allowed for your booking. Any additional guests must be with owner's consent and will be an additional charge. Exceeding the agreed upon number of guests warrants eviction without refund and loss of damage deposit.
We will not rent to vacationing students or singles under 25 years of age unless accompanied by an adult guardian or parent. We discourage families with children younger than 10 years old because of the inherent potential dangers of a house high in a tree.
DAMAGE DEPOSIT-- Nothing will be deducted from the damage deposit as long as the following items are met:
a. No damage is done to unit or its contents, beyond normal wear and tear.
b. No charges are incurred due to contraband, pets or collection of rents or services rendered during the stay.
c. All debris, rubbish and discards are placed in bags or recycling bins, and soiled dishes are cleaned and put away.
d. All keys are returned, and unit is left locked. e. All charges accrued during the stay are paid prior to departure.
